Performance Task: Understanding Normal Distribution and Percentiles

Objective: The objective of this performance task is to assess your understanding of normal distribution and percentile calculations
under the normal curve.
Directions: You are to provide a dataset containing exam scores or grades from one of the quarterly grades or assessment in a class in
any subject. Your task is to analyze the distribution of these exam scores or grades and calculate various percentiles and probability
under a normal distribution curve.
Dataset Description: The dataset includes the following variable:
1. Year and Section/Subject/Name of the School
2. Student’s Family Name: Identifier for each student
3. Exam Score/Grade: The score achieved by each student in the exam.
4. Name and Signature of the subject teacher.

Data Analysis:
1. Construct the Probability Distribution or Probability Mass Function.
2. Make the Normal Curve Distribution based from the data results in number one.
3. Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the exam scores.
4. Construct a histogram to visualize the distribution of exam scores.
5. Determine whether the distribution of exam scores follows a normal distribution.

Percentile Calculation:
1. Find the score in 60th Percentile of the dataset. Interpret the result and determine the percentage above the 60 th Percentile.
2. Find the score in 70th Percentile of the dataset. Interpret the result and determine the percentage above the 70 th Percentile.
3. Find the score in 80th Percentile of the dataset. Interpret the result and determine the percentage above the 80 th Percentile.
4. Find the score in 90th Percentile of the dataset. Interpret the result and determine the percentage above the 90 th Percentile.

Probability Analysis: Sketch and shade the result. You may use any probability/normal distribution graphing tool or draw the
graph manually, ensuring it is neat and visually appealing.
1. Find the Probability of scoring above 70th Percentile. Determine the area under the normal curve to the right of the value.
For example; dataset: 20, 22, 25, 27, 30, 37, 40, 41, 41, 46
Find the Probability of scoring above 70th Percentile. Determine the area under the normal curve to the right of the value.
Solution: 0.70*10=7, hence the score is 41. It means you need to get the probability of scoring above 41.
x−μ 41−32.9
Next is to find the z-score to get the probability. z= = =0.93. Since you are looking for the
σ 8.7
probability of scoring above 41 or that is above 0.93, P(Z > 0.93). Locate the corresponding area to the z-table and the z=0.93
corresponds to the area 0.3238. So, half of the curve which is 0.5 minus the area 0.3238 0r 0.5 – 0.3238 = 0.1762,that is 17.62%.

17.62%

Conclusion: Therefore, the probability of scoring above 41 is 17.62%

2. Find the Probability of scoring below 65th Percentile. Determine the area under the normal curve to the left of the value.
For example; dataset: 20, 22, 25, 27, 30, 37, 40, 41, 41, 46. So, the mean is 32.9 and sd is 8.7
Find the Probability of scoring below 65th Percentile. Determine the area under the normal curve to the left of the value.
Solution: 0.65*10=6.5, hence the score is 40. It means you need to get the probability of scoring below 40.
x−μ 40−32.9
Next is to find the z-score to get the probability. z= = =0.82. Since you are looking for the
σ 8.7
probability of scoring below 40 or that is below 0.82, P(Z< 0.82). Locate the corresponding area to the z-table. And the z=0.82
corresponds to the area from the mean is 0.2939. So, the half of the curve which is 0.5 – 0.2939 = 0.2061. Hence the probability
above the z value 0.82 is 20.61%. And to get the probability below the z –value 0.82 or below the score 40, subtract the 0.2061 to
the whole area the under normal curve, that is 1 – 0.2061 = 0.7939 or 79.39%.

29.39%

79.39%
20.61%

Conclusion: The probability of scoring below 40 is 79.39%. Hence, There is a 79.39% chance of obtaining a score
lower than 40.
