Setting Out Project

This document discusses the process of setting out a building project. It involves establishing the physical positions of building corners and walls based on their coordinates from plans. Instruments like total stations are used to transfer dimensions from layout plans to the ground, clearly defining excavation outlines and wall centers. Calculations are done to find bearings and distances of building points based on control point coordinates.

Setting Out Project

(Building Foundation Points)

Virtual report

This Project is based on Coordinate

Positioning Techniques
What is Setting Out?
It is process of developing the physical of corners and walls of a building, and its done by transferring dimensions from
the lay out plan to the ground. The setting out clearly defines the outline of the excavations and the centre line of the
walls, so that the construction can be carried out according to the plan.
It is also known as reverse surveying because it begin with the plan and ends with the various elements of
particular engineering project correctly positioned in the area.

When is Setting Out done?

- When building a new house, new building, new roads or highway etc (all construction work)
- When renovating an already existing one, especially an extension.

The process of setting out is done by a surveyor, contractor, and overseen by the lead project consultant engineer,
architect, or any other qualified member of the project team.

Temporary and Permanent adjustment Procedure

Before observation started do a temporary and permanent adjustment

Check temporary and permanent adjustment procedure at any website or lecture notes given.
Temporary adjustment is important step before doing any observation.

CONDUCTING A SETTING OUT SURVEY WORK
1) Traverse survey must be done earlier to establish control traverse stations and site plan (diagram 1). Final
bearing, final distance, coordinate and site plan
2) Create setting out plan and layout plan using site plan and proposed scheme drawn (architectural plan)
3) Obtain the building points coordinate from the layout plan. By using coordinates from traverse control points
and building points calculate all the bearing and distances. (We may select only one or two control points
coordinates to perform this calculation)
4) Setup the Total Station (TS) equipment and perform temporary and permanent adjustment. Also setup the
prism reflector at selected reference station.
5) To start the observation target and lock to the chosen reference point, set TS into FACE LEFT and key in the
bearing (from the previous control traverse bearing) of selected reference station (diagram 2)
6) Then unlock the TS and slowly find the bearing of the desired building points. After the bearing is found, use the
mini prism with pole and measuring tape* (option) to find the exact location of the desired building points.
Adjust the TS telescope to eliminate parallax. (diagram 3)
7) As after the building position is found, carefully mark it with wooden pegs (and sometimes sprayed with red
paint).
8) This process (step 6-7) is repeated until all the building points are found (diagram 4).
9) To check the accuracy of the setting out work, setup the TS at another station and repeat step 5 &6. Check if
there are any differences between the earlier marked positioned with the new one. Usually a minimum 1cm
tolerance is allowed, but if the error exceed the limit then repeat the observation or check the lay out plan and
their calculation. (diagram 5)
Attention:
Adjust all the steps using your own words and understanding. Watch setting out building videos on YouTube and read
some materials from any suitable website

control points of corners of a proposed building (B1 and B2).

To find the coordinate of building corners, simply right click on the lines of proposed building and click the
properties in AutoCAD. Check the coordinate at Start Line X and End Line Y (X east-west and Y  is north-
south). *Start line is the first coordinate appear for the line and end line is the last coordinate appear for the
line. Carefully choose one of them, usually we select the start line coordinate. Make sure the proposed
building drawing were drawn according to clock wise direction from building corner 1,2,3, and so on… Copy
all the coordinates into the above table.

• N = 1465.000 – 1910.000 = – 445.000 (ΔL)
• E = 1850.000 – 2120.000 = –270.000 (ΔD)

• P to B2
• N = 1466.000 – 1910.000 = – 444.000 (ΔL)
• E = 1900.000 – 2120.000 = – 220.000 (ΔD)
