Question [10 Marks]
The Holy Quran set forth the path for believers in the quest for knowledge. Discuss with the help of
examples.

Quest of Knowledge

The Holy Quran, as the central religious text of Islam, serves as a guiding light for believers in their
pursuit of knowledge. It provides a comprehensive framework that encourages:

 Seeking knowledge
 Critical thinking
 Understanding of the world.
Let’s try to explore the Quranic perspective on knowledge, its significance, and how it sets forth the path
for believers in the quest for knowledge.

Quranic Perspective :
The Quran emphasizes the importance of knowledge right from the outset. In Surah Al-Alaq (96:1-5), the
first revelation to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, begins with the command:

“Read! In the name of your Lord who created.”

This verse establishes a profound connection between faith and reason, dispelling any notion of a
dichotomy between religious devotion and intellectual inquiry. It invites believers to approach education
as a means of strengthening their relationship with the Creator, recognizing that the pursuit of knowledge
is an act of worship in itself.
This integration of faith and learning is essential in fostering a balanced worldview, where spiritual
insights complement and enrich academic discoveries.

Critical Thinking:
Furthermore, the Quran encourages reflection and contemplation as essential components of acquiring
knowledge. In Surah Ar-Rum (30:21), Allah says,

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity
in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people
who give thought.”
This verse highlights the Quran’s call for believers to ponder over the signs of creation, fostering a deep
understanding of the natural world and the universe.

Understanding of World:
Moreover, the Quran promotes the pursuit of diverse forms of knowledge. It encompasses not only
religious teachings but also scientific, historical, and ethical knowledge. The Quranic narrative often
refers to natural phenomena, historical events, and moral parables to inspire believers to explore various
fields of knowledge. For instance, the Quran mentions the stories of past nations, such as the people of
Thamud and Aad, urging believers to draw lessons from history and learn from the experiences of
previous civilizations.
Additionally, the Quran advocates the application of acquired knowledge for the betterment of society.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269) states,

“He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been
given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.”
This verse underscores the Quran’s emphasis on using knowledge and wisdom for the benefit of
humanity, promoting social justice, compassion, and ethical conduct.

Seeking Knowledge – Major Emphasis in Qur’an :

The Holy Quran serves as a comprehensive guide for believers, setting forth the path for the quest of
knowledge. Its teachings encompass the encouragement of literacy, critical thinking, reflection, and the
pursuit of diverse knowledge domains.
Moreover, the Quran emphasizes the application of knowledge for the betterment of society, reflecting its
relevance in contemporary higher education. By adhering to the Quranic principles of seeking knowledge,
believers can navigate the complexities of the modern world while upholding the values of faith, wisdom,
and compassion.

“And those who strive in Our(cause), We will certainly guide them to our Paths” (29:69)
