Blueprint 7 - U3 - Unit Test

This passage discusses the debate around whether humans should travel to Mars. While some argue it could further exploration and the search for life, the guest Dr. Arya argues that humans carrying bacteria could contaminate Mars and confuse or eliminate any native life, and robots could explore more efficiently and cost effectively.

Daily Herald FACT CHECK: Is Your AI Assistant Spying on You?

As artificial intelligence advances, “virtual assistants” and “smart speakers” are getting more sophisticated all
the time. They’re capable of a variety of jobs like making shopping lists, sending emails, streaming music, and
updating you on the news. They can also be customized to schedule appointments and turn your lights, heat,
and air conditioning on and off with your voice. But do these state-of-the-art appliances have an unforeseen
disadvantage? Can they be used to spy on you? A member of parliament brought up this question yesterday.
MP Gerald Albas posted on social media, “Your virtual assistant is recording all your conversations and
storing them in the cloud. This is unacceptable spying by large tech corporations!” Is this claim plausible?
We decided to check.

According to the companies that make AI devices, it is against their policy to constantly record people’s
conversations. These devices only begin recording after hearing the “wake word,” such as the name “Alana.”
After hearing that word, they do record your voice and send the information to the cloud. Then, when your
conversation with the device is over, it automatically goes back into its “sleeping” state. So Albas was almost
certainly wrong when he said that all of your conversations are being recorded.

However, there is some reason for worrying. AI assistants do not always hear correctly. They may think they
have heard the “wake word” and begin recording without your knowledge. In a notable case, a woman’s
smart speaker emailed a recording of one private conversation to someone on her contact list—just because it
had heard voice instructions incorrectly! This happens rarely, but it is possible. Also, it is not clear what
happens to the audio recordings that are sent to the cloud. Are they kept, or are they thrown out when they’re
no longer needed? Tech companies haven’t clearly answered that question.

1. Virtual assistants are becoming more advanced. true false

2. Gerald Albas made a claim on social media. true false
3. “Alexa” is an example of a “wake word.” true false
4. The writer thinks Albas is mainly correct. true false
5. One woman’s smart speaker emailed out all her conversations. true false

6. Which is NOT an ability of AI assistants mentioned in the reading?

a. Giving news b. Controlling lights c. Waking you up

7. Who is Gerald Albas?

a. A politician b. A tech company CEO c. A consumer

8. What is against the companies’ policies, according to the reading?

a. Using a wake word b. Constantly recording c. Connecting to the cloud

9. The word plausible in the reading means ______.

a. believable b. weird c. frightening

10. Which question has NOT been answered?

a. What is a “wake word”?
b. What happens to audio that is sent to the cloud?
c. Do AI assistants automatically go back to sleep?

Host: Welcome to Astronomy Talk. My guest today is the well-known space scientist Dr. Trisha Arya. And our
topic is a human voyage to Mars. Dr. Arya, is it a good idea or not?
Dr. Arya: It is not. I understand why people are fascinated by Mars. But we should only send robots to get
samples and analyze them.
Host: Why not? Mars had liquid water on it for a very long time, so there could be alien life there. Couldn’t
people study the planet and search for life more efficiently than robots?
Dr. Arya: Actually, no. Artificial intelligence is giving us smarter and smarter robots, which can do more than
humans can for less money.
Host: But space is the final frontier for exploration. Millions of people dream of setting foot on Mars! Isn’t it
worth it just for the experience?
Dr. Arya: It would be fun, but we could destroy our own search for alien life in the process. The problem is
bacteria and other germs. Humans carry huge numbers of them—an even larger number than cells in our
bodies! It’s impossible not to infect Mars with our own bacteria. And after that, we’d never be able to set it
right. Genes from our bacteria could mix with Martian genes. How will we know which life forms came from
us and which have their origins on Mars?
Host: Hmm, I hadn’t thought about that. It could confuse the results of all our tests.
Dr. Arya: Yes. And our germs could even eliminate life on Mars by accident. The risk is too great.
Host: All right, then, is there anywhere in space that humans should go?
Dr. Arya: Certainly! We should build a Moon base. We already know there’s no life on the Moon. It’s a great
place for research, and it might even be a better habitat for people than Mars.

1. The host said that Mars had liquid water. true false
2. Dr. Arya does not think AI is very useful. true false
3. She worries about mixing Earth genes and Martian genes. true false
4. The host thinks Dr. Arya is probably wrong. true false
5. Dr. Arya is enthusiastic about people going to the Moon. true false

6. Dr. Arya thinks that we should _______.

a. not study Mars b. employ robots to study Mars c. send humans to Mars

7. Which is true, according to Dr. Arya?

a. People could be infected by Martian bacteria.
b. People carry more germs than cells in our bodies.
c. Bacteria have already been found on Mars.

8. Dr. Arya is worried about _______.

a. preserving life on Mars b. the dangers to humans on Mars c. Both a and b

9. What are the advantages of going to the Moon over going to Mars, according to Dr. Arya?
a. A better place for people to live b. No risk of destroying life c. Both a and b

10. The word risk in the reading means ________.

a. danger b. discovery c. disaster
