People consume goods and services for their daily needs. For this reason, it is
important to learn about the basic rights and responsibilities of each consumer and
gain more knowledge on preventive medicine and services to achieve a good quality
of living.

This module is designed to help you understand the importance and components of
consumer health. It also includes basic information about over-the-counter and
prescription medicines which is essential in improving your overall health.

At the end of the module, you are expected to:

2. explain the different components of consumer health;
3. differentiate over-the-counter from prescription medicines;

Consumer health pertains to the aspect of the wise purchase of health products and
services to obtain the ultimate satisfaction and wellness of the body.

How important is consumer health?

People consume goods, services, and gifts of nature for their day-to-day existence on
Earth. It is for this reason that people should be aware of vital health topics and be
educated about preventive medicine and services to achieve individuals with
knowledge, skills, aptitudes, values, and capacity to become responsible consumers.

health topics and educate the public about preventive medicine.

disease from its symptoms. They are health products that are important in
addressing health problems. There are two main classifications of medicine
according to how they may be obtained: over-the-counter medicine and prescription
medicine.

What are over-the-counter medicines?

Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs are medicines sold directly to a customer without a


prescription from a healthcare professional. OTC drugs are selected by a regulatory
agency to ensure that they contain ingredients that are safe and effective when used
