republic with Pipphalivana as capital. They adopted Peacock (Mayura) as their
state’s emblem.

Note that they did not call themselves as Moriya/Maurya. The name
Moriya/Maurya does not occur in any inscriptions or books wrriten during
Maurya period. Hundreds of years later after the fall of Mauryan Empire when
history was written they were named as Moriya/Maurya due to their
state emblem (Peacock).

Kshatriya dynasties that ruled in South Asia region during the ancient and medieval period.

Shakya caste is also known as Maurya [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurya_Empire] . Shakya dynasty is

known as Sinhalese/Sinhala in Sri Lanka, which also was a ruling dynasty of Sri Lanka.

Shakyas mostly live in India (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan), Nepal, Tibet, Sri Lanka
and Myanmar(Burma). A very small number of Shakyas also live in China and Japan since ancient times.

Shakya dynasty established their rule multiple times in different parts of South Asia, under different time
periods and under different names. For example,
1) The Shakya Republic (approx.1500-500 BCE) ruled in North India and Nepal. Notable rulers were
Shuddhodhana, Siddhartha (founded Buddhism and later came to be known as Gautam Buddha
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautama_Buddha] ), and Rahula.

2) The Maurya Empire (322 – 185 BCE) ruled in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh
and some southern parts of China. Notable rulers were Chandragupta Maurya
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandragupta_Maurya] , and the most famous king Ashoka
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashoka] .

3) The Burmese Monarchy (approx.800 BCE) ruled in Myanmar (Burma) under Abhiraja/Abhiyaza
Shakya. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abhiyaza]
4) The Sinhalese Kingdom (437 BCE- 1017 CE) ruled in Sri Lanka. Kingdom of Anuradhapura.

The origins of Shakya dynasty is traced back to Vedic Period [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vedic_period]

(1500-500 BC), also known as the Iron Age [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Age_India] . The name is
derived from the Sanskrit word śakya which means 'the one who can'.

Ninth Avatar of Vishnu: Siddhartha Shakya / Gautama Buddha

Hindu religion considers Gautama Buddha (Siddhartha Shakya) as the

ninth avatar(incarnation) of God Vishnu [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu] ; Rama and Krishna were
seventh and eighth avatars respectively. This is also mentioned in scared texts GarudaPurana
[http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/gpu/gpu10.htm#fr_68] and Matsya Purana
[http://www.dharmakshetra.com/avatars/Matsya%20Purans.html] .

The ten avatars of Vishnu are collectively known as the Dasavatara

[http://www.dharmakshetra.com/avatars/Matsya%20Purans.html] (a Sanskrit compound meaning "ten

The Brahmin lineage: Gautama Gotra

The Shakya caste belongs to Gautama gotra [http://books.google.co.in/books?
id=Nt4nbp1VIhsC&pg=PA2677#v=onepage&q&f=false] , which is a Brahmin gotra

This is because the Shakya clan, even though a Kshatriya caste, traces its lineage from Maharishi Gautam
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautama_Maharishi] (Hindi: महर्षि गौतम) one of the great seven rishis
or Saptrishi [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saptarishi] .

This is the reason [http://books.google.co.in/books?id=I5owyPqm1XAC&pg=PA71] why Buddha is known

as Gautam Buddha. But not only Buddha himself, but also his father Shuddhodhana and his cousin
Ananda, were addressed as Gautama; while Mahapajapati and her sister Maya, both belonging to Shakya
clan(kula), bore the name Gautami. That it was customary, in addressing the individuals in question, to use
not the kula name (Shakya) but gotra (Gautama), shows how high a value was set – precisely in the ranks of
Khattiya (Kshatriya) – upon membership in one of the ancient gotras. This finds expression also in a verse
which frequently recurs in Buddhist Suttas: “The Khattiya is regarded as the best among people who set a
value on gotta”.

Similar to Shakya caste, Lord Mahaveer, the founder of Jainism, was a Kshatriya but belonged to Kashyapa
gotra which is also a Brahmin gotra from Maharishi Kashyapa, who was also one of the Saptrishis.

Gautama Buddha / Siddhartha Shakya

Siddhartha [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautama_Buddha] Shakya is the most famous of all Shakyans.
Siddhartha was the son of king Shuddhodana [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%9Auddhodana] , the ruler
of Shakya Republic of Kapilavastu [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapilavastu] .
Siddhartha abdicated the throne and founded a new religion, Buddhism
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism] . Siddhartha later came to be known as Buddha
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautama_Buddha] meaning 'the enlightened one'.
