CHECKLIST - HAIR WASH
Preparation of Articles

PROCEDURE

2. Remove unnecessary items from work area
3. Arrange articles conveniently in bed side
4. Switch off the fan
5. Close the windows
6. Make a trough with the long mackintosh
7. Wash hands
8. Position patient diagonally on bed, head place at the edge of bed,
shoulder is placed on pillow, top end of the trough is supported by the
shoulder & bottom end of the trough is placed inside bucket.
9. Place small mackintosh lined with towel over the pillow
10. Loosen hair & remove knots
11. Plug ears with non- absorbent cotton
12. Place sponge cloth, (folded) over the eyes.
13. Wet hair in sections. Obtain help from patient’s relative/ another if
available to pour water. Place hand in such a way that water does not
spill out of trough but reaches bucket
14. Apply shampoo evenly on hair & scalp starting at the hair line in the
center & farther side to nearer side & from front to back. Lift the head
slightly with one hand to shampoo the sides and back of head.
Massage scalp by using pads of finger tips. Scrub hair along total
length
15. Rinse hair thoroughly until hair is free of soap.
16. Dip hair in basin at the end of the procedure, by placing the basin
close to patient’s neck. Rinse hair & squeeze with both hands
thoroughly
17. Lift the head slightly with one hand & slide trough into the bucket
with the other hand. Secure hair with bath towel.
18. Remove non- absorbent cotton & discard into the k- basin
19. Replace sponge cloth from fore head. Wipe face with towel.
20. Dry hair. Keep patient comfortable. Comb hair to remove tangles.
21. Provide comfortable position
22. Change bed linen if required
23. Provide warm drink if patient prefers
24. Rinse used articles and replace them. Wash hands.
25. Record the procedure and any pertinent findings related to the
condition of hair & scalp
