quotation. [1]
(3) ‘horned head’ OR ‘beaten back’ [1]
(4) For one mark students should identify that the bull is attracted to the matador’s cape.
For two marks students should engage with the fact that the bull is acting ‘against its will’, seemingly hypnotised by the matador’s power.
(5) For one mark students should identify the simile “lay down for a moment as though resting at pasture.”
For two marks, student must provide a reasonable effect for the simile. They might note its euphemistic effect, how it emphasises the slow and almost anti-climactic nature of
xxxthe bull’s death, or the power of the matador in bringing the bull to such a controlled death.
(6) The matador must stand above the bull’s horns momentarily and is left physically vulnerable as a result [1]
(7) Onomatopoeia [1]
(8) Answers will vary and markers should exercise judgement. For one mark, students need to provide a relevant quotation supports their view of opinion. For two marks, students
xxxcan provide a simple view of attitude: for example, the writer is impressed with the skill and daring of the matador in the bullfight. For three marks, the student must offer a
xxxsubtler view, regarding – for instance – the scope of the matador’s mastery and transformation of the bull’s brutish instinct for blood into an almost artistic display. Reserve this
xxxthird mark only for excellent answers – do not be generous with marks here.
