I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a) define what antonym is;
b) identify each of the common English words’ antonyms;
c) create their own lists of antonyms for commonly used words; and
d) promote teamwork and good communication.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Antonyms

Materials: Laptop, projector, presentation, flashcards, pen,
paper and whiteboard marker
Values Integration: Optimism, teamwork and respect

III. Procedures:
A. Preliminary Activities:
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Submission of Assignment
6. Recapitulation/Review

B. Motivation: Opposite Charades

Instructions:
a. The class will be divided into two groups.
b. Each of those groups will choose a leader, and he or she will be given
words assigned by the teacher.
c. Prior to the activity, the first group to lead the game will be decided via
heads or tails.
d. Once decided, the leader will come up in front and act out the word
assigned to him or her. However, the participating group members should
guess the opposite word of it.
e. Each group will be given three minutes. The group with the most guesses
will be considered the winner.

C. Lesson Proper:
1. Analysis
Processing Questions:
1.a. How did you find the activity? Was it difficult?
2.b. What did you notice about the words?
3.c. From your previous lessons, do you have an idea what it is called?
2. Abstraction
Antonyms - antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. For
example, an antonym of day is night, and an antonym of on is off. The
term antonym comes from antonyms, which is the technical grammar term
for words that have contradictory meanings—but you can think of
antonyms as opposites.
For example:
a. The antonym of fast is slow. The antonym of happy is sad.
b. The antonym of smooth is rough.

3. Activity: Running Man Challenge

Instructions:
a. The class will be divided into two teams.
b. The teacher will present a set of flashcards with antonyms and show
them to the class.
c. Each team member will race to find the antonym for the word on their
card.
d. To make this activity challenging, participating members should follow
the physical course set up by the teacher. A penalty of 1 minus point
will be given should a student go off course.
e. Once the group member found the antonym, he or she will run back to
their team’s starting point to tag the next person in line.
f. The first team to have all their members complete the race wins.

4. Application: Comparative Essay

Instructions: The teacher will give a specific topic (either about war and
peace, or love and hate) to their students. The teacher will then ask their
students to write an essay comparing and contrasting them using key
antonyms in their descriptions.

5. Generalization
5.a. What is the definition of antonyms?
5.b. How can you apply antonyms in your writing?
5.c. Why do you think antonyms are important in learning the English
grammar?

IV. Evaluation: Match ‘Em Up!

Instructions: The class will be divided into pairs. The teacher will then prepare a list
of words and their corresponding antonyms. Each pair will work together to match
the words with their antonyms. Some words included in this activity may not have
the exact opposite word, which is why students will need to discuss and debate with
their partner to come up with the best match for each word. Usage of dictionary is
permitted.
Answers:
a. ephemeral: (adj.) = permanent
b. obfuscate: (verb) = clarify
c. audacious: (adj.) = timid
d. conciliatory: (adj.) = antagonistic
e. omnipresent: (adj.) = absent
f. juxtapose: (verb) = disconnect
g. enigmatic: (adj.) = straightforward
h. transient: (adj.) = permanent
i. stoic: (adj.) = agitated
j. verbose: (adj.) = succinct

V. Assignment: Do It Yourself!
Instructions: Make a list of ten commonly-use English words and provide their
opposite words or antonyms. Provide a sentence examples of each of those words.
Present your work on a one whole intermediate pad paper.
