Writing strategies:
Read and try to translate the text to get more information about presentation structure.

A presentation usually consists of at least three parts. Typically there will be an

introduction outlining the scope of the presentation and providing an overview of the
project. The central part, or body, goes into greater detail and might be structured
according to building sections or phases. The conclusion should sum up the scheme
emphasizing the key points and invite the audience to ask questions or take part in a
discussion. The introduction is perhaps the most important part of a presentation – it is
the first impression the audience has of the presenter.
The introduction should be used to:
 welcome the audience
 introduce the project
 Outline the structure of the presentation. The table below lists useful expressions that
you can use to introduce the various parts of your presentation.

have been made since the last meeting, and it is the first time the client receives a
presentation of the project as a whole. Put the parts of the architect’s

section, you’ll see that the single pitched roof rises towards the
garden, which emphasizes the open character of the façade. The overhang of the roof is
approximately 1m offering some structural shading to the sunny side of the house. As you can see
here, the overhang is less on the north façade allowing as much light as possible to penetrate through
the small windows.

re with you again today. I think we’re nearly there, and if there are no major
alterations to be made, we’ll be able to submit the planning application next week. But before we
start talking about business matters, let me talk you through the design. First of all I’m going to take
you through the various floors, beginning on the ground floor, and then we’ll look at the sections and
the elevations.

design. I know you envisioned a private adult area on a separate storey, however the extra height
would be very difficult to manage on this site.
Nevertheless, I think we have succeeded in offering clearly separated parent and children zones by
adding the spacious hall on the first floor.

Here you can see that the hall functions as both a distributor and as a separator. On the ground floor it
separates the kitchen, dining and living area from the office, and on the first floor it separates the
adult area from the children’s area. Now let’s take a look at the stairs. This set takes you up to the
first floor. The stairs to the cellar are behind this door.
Finally, the bedrooms on the first floor. The master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-
in wardrobe is situated above the office. The children’s bedrooms are arranged in a row above the
living and dining area.

Writing: Ways of linking ideas.

Activity nº 1:

We have to make sure our readers can follow our ideas. We used relative clauses to link
information together, now we will work with connectors to mark reasons, results, and contrasts in
our writing.

What are the links between these ideas? What words can we use to mark the links?

1 The accident happened.

2 The operator's carelessness.

3 The supervisor was not present.

What are the links between these ideas? What words can we use to mark the

links? 4 Suitable protections should be worn.

5 Safety helmets should be used where there is a danger of falling objects.

Activity nº2: When we write, we may have to describe, explain, argue, persuade, complain, etc.
In all these forms of writing, we use ideas. To make our writing effective. One way of helping our
readers is to make the links between the ideas in our writing.

What are the links between these pairs of ideas? What words can we use to mark
the links?

Body of the report

In this part of your writing you are going to include the headings and subheadings of your
project. The information should be organised so that the reader can follow the development
of your project. As we stated above, we’ll work with materials: their properties and qualities.
In this section of the writing the headings could be MATERIALS and from these you can
divide your writing in various subheadings for example: wood, steel, iron, etc. and write
shorts descriptions about why you choose these materials and for what purpose, explaining
their properties and why they are adequate for this type of construction. In this section you
can also add pictures, tables or a sketch (croquis, plano a mano alsada) of the building.

The body of the report:

 Presents the information from your project, both real world and theoretical, or your
design.
 Organises information under appropriate headings and subheadings.
 You can also use figures and tables here to avoid using so much text, and also to
be more effective in communicating your ideas.

Activity 9: According to the explanation write the body of your Technical Report.

Conclusions and recommendations

If there are no recommendations to be made as a result of the project,
just call this section Conclusions.

The Conclusions section sums up the key points of your project, the
essential features of

your design, and the significant choice of materials. It should:

 Be written to relate directly to the aims of the project as stated in
the Introduction.
 Indicates if your aims have been achieved or not.
 Summarize the information in your report.
 And make recommendations for future work (where applicable)
 Highlight the significance or usefulness of your work.

If you want to add more pictures of materials and of your

construction you can add another section called APPENDICES
to your writing and add there the pictures and tables.
