Writing is a fundamental form of communication that allows individuals to express thoughts, ideas, and
emotions.
It encompasses a diverse range of styles, including storytelling, poetry, academic discourse, and technical
writing.
Whether it's through pen and paper or digital mediums, writing serves as a timeless conduit for sharing
knowledge and preserving cultural heritage.
Throughout history, writing has undergone significant evolution, adapting to various societal advancements and
technological innovations
Development of Writing
1. Early Forms of Writing
The development of writing can be traced back to early forms of communication such as cave paintings and rock
carvings, which served as a visual means of recording important events and conveying messages within
communities. These primitive forms of writing laid the foundation for the evolution of more complex writing
systems.
2. Emergence of Symbolic Writing
Symbolic writing systems started to emerge around 3200 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia and
Egypt, with the use of pictograms and ideograms to represent objects, concepts, and sounds. This marked a
significant advancement in the ability to convey abstract ideas and expand the scope of written
communication.
3. Development of Writing Tools
The progression of writing involved the innovation of writing tools, from clay tablets and quill pens to the
invention of paper and the modern-day writing implements. These advancements in writing tools played a
crucial role in the proliferation and standardization…..
Phonographic Writing:
The characters or symbols represent individual sounds or phonemes of a language. In phonographic writing, the
pronunciation of words is emphasized rather than their meaning or visual representation.
Rebus Principal of phonography allows a sign to be used for anything with the same prounciation as it was
originally intended. It is all about using images/pictograph to communicate a message For instance, the symbol
for 'reed' could also 'reimburse'
Syllabic Writing:
Syllabic writing uses symbols to represent syllables rather than individual sounds or entire words. This type of
writing is found in languages like Japanese kana and Cherokee syllabary.
Syllabic writing systems are still used today in many languages including Japanese, Korean,
Chinese, Tamil and Telugu.
Alphabetic Writing:
Alphabetic writing is based on the concept of representing individual sounds, known as phonemes, with specific
written symbols, known as graphemes. These graphemes form the building blocks of a language's orthography,
which encompasses the spelling rules, grammar, and punctuation. The development of alphabetic writing
systems has had a profound impact on the evolution of written language, allowing for greater precision and
clarity in written communication. From the phonemes to the graphemes and the rules of orthography, the
foundation of alphabetic writing has shaped the way we understand and convey language.
Written English:
Written English is the way in which English language is transmitted through a conventional system of graphic
sign or letter compared to spoken English. The earliest forms of written English were primarily the translations
of Latin words in to English in the 9th century. It is also called as English Script
Written English has a rich history dating back to the 5th century. It changed over time as a result of influences
from other languages, including Latin and French, giving rise to Modern English. The invention of the printing
press in the fifteenth century contributed to the further standardization of English spelling and grammar, which
is today widely utilized in literature, business, education, and technology: Characteristics of Written English
1. Written texts are lexically dense compared to spoken language - they have proportionately more lexical
words than grammatical words.
2. Written texts are shorter and have longer, more complex words and phrases.
3. They have more noun-based phrases, more nominalizations, and more lexical variation.
