Us - PDF - ARRIEL 1 - All Variants Hung Start

The document is a service letter from Turbomeca regarding issues with hung starts on ARRIEL 1 engines. It explains that deteriorated thermocouple harnesses can cause incorrect temperature readings, leading pilots to limit fuel too much during start up and cause hung starts. The letter recommends inspecting the thermocouple harness as a priority during fault analysis for hung starts.

Subject: ARRIEL 1 - All variants

Hung start Bordes, July 3, 2002

Dear Sir, Madam,

We have been informed of some cases of hung starts, which were not resolved by changing
an accessory.
Having analyzed these cases, we are led to remind you that an operating anomaly of the
thermocouple harness can generate an incorrect T4 reading (too high).
When the engine is started, the pilot limits the fuel flow with the throttle in order to control the
max. T4 temperature.

If the harness has deteriorated, the T4 temperature information read by the pilot can be
incorrect (the value read is greater than the actual value). As a result, the pilot limits the fuel
flow with the throttle in order to protect the engine, and thus causes a hung start.
Within the framework of a fault analysis for hung starts, we recommend that you carry out, as
a priority, an inspection of the thermocouple harness. We specified this inspection in the
Appendix to this letter for variants 1 A - A1 - A2 - B - C - C1 - C2 - D - D1 - K - K1 - M - M1 -
MN - MN1, and specified in the Maintenance Manual, chapter 77-20-01, page 202, for variants
1 E2 - 1S - 1S1
This inspection is required to be carried out at the next maintenance inspection, and then
every 750 hours.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

Yours faithfully,
Technical Support Department

COLD ENGINE TEST:

1 Equipment required:
50V DC insulation measuring equipment

2 Checking insulation resistance:

Under a voltage of 50V DC, check that the insulation resistance between each pin and
the connector body is greater than or equal to 0.5 MW.

3 Continuity check
Check the continuity and the resistance of each wire between pins
5 and 4 6 and 1 3 and 2

The value of the resistance must be less than or equal to 2.95 W +/- 0.3 W.
The 0.3 W tolerance takes account of the influence of the outside air temperature
between - 40°C and + 50°C.
