OVERVIEW
◼ 1897: Marconi performed the wireless
communications with the 15km distance at the
Bristol.
◼ 1946: The first mobile communication provided
service for 15 cities in America.
◼ 1970: Pinet introduced about the first digital
switching system.
◼ 1982: Cellular mobile networks were
commercialized in Chicago.
◼ 1992: GSM was supplied in France, Germany.

1G SYSTEMS

◼ The first generation (1G):

◼ Was developed on 1977 in Chicago.
◼ Analog mobile communication system uses
frequency-division multiple access(FDMA) and
frequency modulation(FM).
◼ Voice services is merely.
◼ Low quality.
◼ Poor security.

1G SYSTEMS

◼ Some typical 1G systems:

◼ NMT: Nordic Mobile Telephone uses 450MHz
band. Deployed in the Nordic countries in 1981.
◼ TACS: Total Access Communication System
was deployed in England in 1985.
◼ AMPS: Advanced Mobile Phone System was
deployed in North America in 1978 and was
used at the 800MHz band.

2G SYSTEMS

◼ The second generation (2G):

◼ Was developed in 1990.
◼ Digital cellular mobile network.
◼ High capacity.
◼ Voice services are so good.
◼ Support for data services.
◼ Use Time-division multiple access(TDMA) and
narrowband code-division multiple access(CDMA).

2G SYSTEMS

◼ Some typical 2G systems:

◼ PDC (Personal Digital Cellular) uses TDMA and
was deployed in Japan.
◼ IS-95 (CDMA one) was deployed in Korea and
America.
◼ D-AMPS (IS-136 –Digital Advanced Mobile
Phone System) uses TDMA and was deployed
in America.
◼ GSM uses TDMA and was deployed in Europe.

2G SYSTEMS
◼ Evolved Second Generation (2.5G,2.75G)
◼ GPRS (2.5G) - General Packet Radio Services:
➢ In 2000, GPRS was deployed.
➢ Was developed from GSM.
➢ Speed of transmission data is 171,2 kbps.
◼ EDGE (2.75G) - Enhance Data rate for GSM
Evolution
➢ In 2003, Edge was deployed.
➢ Was developed from GPRS.
➢ Speed of transmission data is 384 kbps.

◼ The third generation (3G):
◼ Support services for high-speed data packet.
◼ Multimedia services: high-quality sound, high-
quality video...
◼ Support to connect GPS, email, play the high-
ends games…

3G SYSTEMS

◼ Some typical 3G systems:

◼ W-CDMA (3GPP): base of UMTS (Universal
Mobile Telecommunication System), found on
CDMA spread-spectrum technology.
◼ CDMA2000 (3GPP2): the next generation of 2G
CDMA, IS-95 standard.
