Assignment 2

The document outlines five problems related to gas dynamics and compressible flow. Problem 1 involves finding the maximum deflection angle for shocks in an air flow undergoing two turns. Problem 2 involves finding flow properties after two deflections of a wall parallel to air flow. Problem 3 involves finding the exit angle of air flow from a convergent-divergent nozzle into a duct. Problem 4 involves calculating heat addition and pressure loss after a normal shock in a nozzle-duct system. Problem 5 involves calculating heat transfer for air flow in a duct with and without a normal shock.

AS2030: Gas Dynamics

Assignment 2
Date: 05/04/2024
Full marks : 10

1. (a) Airflow at M= 2.2 takes a compression

turn of 12° and then another turn of angle
θ in Figure. What is the maximum value
of θ for the second shock to be attached?
Will the two shocks intersect for any θ
less than θmax?

(b) Find the Mach numbers before and after the normal shock which occurs
in the diverging section of a convergent-divergent air nozzle whose throat
area is half of exit area and the ratio of stagnation pressure at entry is 2.5
times the exit static pressure. Find also the location of the shock with respect
to throat area. [1.5 +1.5]

2. Air flows over a flat wall parallel to ground at M=2 at P=1atm, T=300K. The
wall smoothly moves away from the flow to an angle of 15°, and after some
more straight length, it is further deflected to around 15° away from flow.
Find the flow conditions at the two flat portions (M, P, T). Also find the
maximum deflection the flow can have further after the second deflection.
[1.5]
3. A C-D nozzle with area ratio 2.0 is supplied by a reservoir containing air at
500 kPa. The nozzle exhausts into a constant area duct of length to dimeter
ratio of 10 and friction coefficient of 4f=0.02. If the back pressure is 50 kPa,
find out at what angle the flow leaves from the end of the constant area duct.
Also sketch the jet structures (no need to calculate the flow properties inside
the jet) at the duct end at least up to one shock cell. If the duct is removed
from the nozzle, what is the angle at which the flow leaves the nozzle exit for
the same reservoir pressure and back pressure? Sketch the jet structures at
the nozzle exit in this case. Draw the h-s diagrams for both the cases. Assume
isentropic flow in the nozzle. [2]
4. Air enters a convergent-divergent nozzle with stagnation conditions of 400
kPa and 400 K. The area ratio of the nozzle is 4. After passing through the
nozzle, the flow enters a duct where heat is added. At the end of the duct
there is a normal shock wave. The stagnation temperature upstream of the
shock wave is 500 K. Assuming isentropic flow in the nozzle and Rayleigh
flow in the duct, calculate the heat added and the stagnation pressure loss.
[1.5]

5. Air enters a duct with a Mach number of 2.0, and the temperature and
pressure are 170 K and 0.7 bar, respectively. Heat transfer takes place while
the flow proceeds down the duct. A converging section (A2/A3 = 1.45) is
attached to the outlet as shown in Figure, and the exit Mach number is 1.0.
Assume that the inlet conditions and exit Mach number remain fixed. Find
the amount and direction of heat transfer (a) If there are no shocks in the
system (b) If there is a normal shock someplace in the duct. (c) For part (b),
does it make any difference where the shock occurs? [2]
