EDMA 111 FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS SEMESTER 1 2024

ASSESSMENT TASK 1: ASSIGNMENT SOLUTIONS

PART A SHORT WORKOUT ( /27 mks)

Question 1: 3mks

Which number category does 7 belong to? State each and explain why.

Solution:

The number 7

• is an integer because it is a whole number without any fractional or decimal part.

• It is also a whole number because it is not a fraction or a decimal,
• and it is a natural number because it is a positive whole number.

Therefore, the number 7 falls into all three categories: integer, whole, and natural.

Question 2: (3 mrs)
𝟐𝟐
Fraction ; is rational, while 𝝅 is irrational. Explain why.
𝟕

22/7 is rational since it is can be expressed as a ratio, also when we divide 22 by 7, we get a
terminating decimal. While 𝝅 is irrational because it has non-terminating decimal value
which can not be expressed as a ratio.

Question 3: 4mks
6
If ; = 3√2 − 𝑥√3, Find the value of x. (4 mks)
3√2−2√3

Solution:

Given, 6/(3√2 – 2√3) = 3√2 – x√3….(i)

Consider LHS,
6/(3√2 – 2√3)
Rationalizing the denominator, we get;
[6/(3√2 – 2√3)] [(3√2 + 2√3)/ (3√2 + 2√3)]
= [6(3√2 + 2√3)]/ [(3√2)2 – (2√3)2]
= [6(3√2 + 2√3)]/ (18 – 12)
= 6(3√2 + 2√3)/6
= 3√2 + 2√3….(ii)
From (i) and (ii),
-x = 2

x = -2

Question 4. 2+2=4mks

The item given on the left is on sale at 60% Discount. (2mks each = 4mks)

Express the selling price in

(a) Kina as a fraction

SP = Cos t Pr ice − Discount
SP = 398 − ( 60%of 398 )
SP = 398 − 238.80
SP = K152.20
20
SP = K152
100

(b) Toea as a decimal K152.20t x 100 = 15,220 toea

Question 5. 3mks

What is the H.C.F. of smallest prime number and the smallest composite number?

Answer:
Smallest prime number = 2 = 21
Smallest composite number = 4 = 22

H.C.F. (2, 4) = 21 = 2
Question 6 3mks

Product of two irrational numbers is always an irrational number’. Negate the statement by
giving counter example.

Answer:
Take 2 – √5, 2 + √5 both are irrational. Their product
= (2 – √5) (2 + √5)
= 22 – (√5)2 = 4 – 5 = – 1 Which is a rational number.

Question 7 3mks

The LCM of two numbers is 14 times their HCF. The sum of LCM and HCF is 600. If one number
is 280, then find the other number.

Answer:
According to the statement of the question, we have:
LCM of two numbers = 14 × HCF of two numbers
Also, LCM + HCF = 600
⇒ 14 × HCF + HCF = 600
⇒ 15 HCF = 600
⇒ HCF = 40
∴ LCM = 14 × 40 = 560
Now, one number is 280
∴ 280 × Other number = 40 × 560
⇒ Other number = 80

Question 8 2mks
4
Write the surd 1+2 in the simplest form:
√3

Solution:

Given surd expression: 4/(1+2√(3 ))

To simplify the given surd expression, multiply both numerator and denominator by the conjugate
of the denominator of the surd expression and simplify it.

4
=
1+2√3
4 1−2√3
= ×
1+2√3 1−2√3
4−8√3
=
1−2√3+2√3−4(3)
4−8√3
=
1−12
𝟒−𝟖√𝟑
=
−𝟏𝟏
𝟒−𝟖√𝟑
Hence, the simplification of the given surd is: =
−𝟏𝟏

Question 9 2mks
Simplify: -3 - -4 + -3 x -2 ÷ -6

Solution: -3 - -4 + -3 x -2 ÷ -6

= -3 + 4 + 6 ÷ -6

= -3 + 4 - 1

=0

PART B MULTIPLE CHOICE & EXPLANATION (UNDERSTANDING)

For each question, select the best possible alternative and state/explain/justify your answer.

1. The decimal expansion of 22/7 is

(a) Terminating
(b) Non-terminating and repeating
(c) Non-terminating and Non-repeating
(d) None of the above

Answer: (b) Non-terminating and repeating

Explanation: 22/7 = 3.14285714286..

2. HCF of 26 and 91 is:

(a) 15
(b) 13
(c) 19
(d) 11
Answer: (b) 13
Explanation: The prime factorization of 26 and 91 is;
26 = 2 x 13
91 = 7 x 13
Hence, HCF (26, 91) = 13

3. Which of the following is not irrational?

(a) (3 + √7)
(b) (3 – √7)
(c) (3 + √7) (3 – √7)
(d) 3√7

Answer: (c) (3 + √7) (3 – √7)

Explanation: If we solve, (3 + √7) (3 – √7), we get;

(3 + √7) (3 – √7) = 32 – (√7)2 = 9 – 7 = 2 [By a2 – b2 = (a – b) (a + b)]

4. The addition of a rational number and an irrational number is equal to:

(a) rational number

(b) Irrational number
(c) Both
(d) None of the above
Answer: (b) Irrational number
The addition of a rational number and an irrational number is equal to irrational number.

5. The least number that is divisible by all the numbers from 1 to 5 is:

(a) 70

(b) 60

(c) 80

(d) 90

Answer: (b) 60

Explanation: The least number will be LCM of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Hence, LCM (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 60
