B.E.(Mech) Part-II 4th Semester Final Examinatio n, 2015

Subject : Applied Thermodynamics (ME-402)

Branch: Mechanical Engineering

Time:3 Hours Full lvlarks: 70

Answer six questions taking three from each half. All questions carry equal marks.
Uses of steam table and Mollier diagram are allowed.

FIRST HALF

1. (a) What do you mean by equivalent evaporation and efficiency of a boiler? What are
the different losses associated with a boiler plant. How will you estimate those losses?

(b) A boiler is being tested for 24 hours and during this trial dry saturated steam at an
average pressure of 10 bar is produced from 15 ton of water consuming 1.5 ton of coal.
Composition of coal shows that it has 3o/o moisture and 4Yo ash. Feed water is added at
350C. Determine the boiler efficiency, the equivalent evaporation per kg of dry coal and
the equivalent evaporation per kg of combustible present in the coal. Calorific value of
coal may be taken as 30.1 MJ/kg.

2. (a) Explain briefly the working of a mechanical vapour compression refrigeration

system with the help of schematic, T-s and p-h diagrams.

(b) A double acting s cylinder reciprocating air compressor has a piston

displacement of 0.015 m3 revolution, operates at 500 rpm and has a 5%o clearance.
The air is received at 1 bar delivered at 6 bar. The compression and expansion are
polytropicwithn= 1.3. the volumetric efficiency of the compressor. Also
calculate the power required run it. If the inlet temperature of air is 200C, find the heat
transferred and its direction the compression.

3. (a) Derive an expression for the COP of Bell-Colernan cycle. What will happen to the
COP if the pressure ratio of the system is increased? State the merits and demerits of air
as refrigerant.

(b) A simple saturated vapour compression refrigeration system works between

evaporator temperatue of -100C and condenser temperature of 300C using R-134a as the
refrigerant. Calculate the COP of the system. Also calculate the mass flow rate of the
refrigerant, suction volume and power per ton of refrigeration: The relevant properties of
R-134a are given below. ;

Temp. P*, Oar) vr 1m3/kg) hr(kJ/kg) he(kJlkg) s6(kJ/kg-K) suftJ/kg-K)

+30 7.7008 0.02667 241.65 414.94 r.1432 1.7r49

The specific heat of R-134a vapour may be taken as 1.044 kJAg-K.

4. Write short notes on any THREE of the following:

(a) Lamont Boiler
(b) Volumetric efficienoy of a compressor
(c) Effect of superheating and subcooling on COP of VCR system
(d) Mulistage compression
SECOND HALF

5 (a) Define the mean temperature of heat addition. Explain in brief the different
methodologies used for the enhancement in mean temperature of heat addition for an
ideal Rankine cycle.
(b) In case of an ideal Rankine cycle, the pressure and temperature of steam at inlet of
the turbine are 100 bar and 5200c respectively. After isentropic expansion, steam leaves
the turbine at 0.02 bar. Calculate (i) efficiency of the cycle, (ii) specific steam
consumption (SSC) and (iii) heat rate. Consider pump wbrk. Use steam table.

6 (a) Draw p-v and T-s diagrams of a Diesel cycle. Mention each process and deduce the
expression of its thermal efficiency.
(b) An Otto cycle is operating at compression ratio of 8. The working fluid at the inlet
of compressor is at I bar and 160c. The maximum cycle temperature is ll000c. Estimate
(i) specific heat addition, (ii) specific heat rejection, (iii) mean effective pressure in bar
and (iv) thermal efficiency of the cycle. Assume that Co and R for the working fluid are
1.005 and 0.287 kJlKg.K respectively.

7 (a) Draw the relevant flow, p-v and T-s diagrams of an open cycle atrd a closed cycle
gas turbine power plant. Mention the processes in each case. Also state merits and
demerits of the said cycles
(b) In a gas turbine power plant operating under an air standard Brayton cycle, the
pressure and temperature of the working fluid at the inlet of the compressor are I bar and
l60c respectively. The pressure ratio of the cycle is 7. The maximum cycle temperature is
10500c. Find out (i) ipecific work done by turbine, (ii) specific work done on the
compressor, (iii) ratio between specific heat addition and heat rejection, and (iv) cycle
efficiency. Assume that C, ind R for the working fluid are 1.005 and 0.287 kJ/Kg.K

(b) Mean effective pressure'
(c) Radio active radiations I

(d) Carnot cycle i
