ECSS@26: ”Journeying Together as One in Faith, Hope, and Love”

Name: ____________________________________ Section: ________________________

Grade level: Grade 5 – 1st Quarter (Module 2)

Subject: Mathematics
Formation Standard: Faithful Servant (Character Development)

- The learner will be able to manage time and personal resources efficiently and
effectively.

I. Established Goal:
The learner demonstrates understanding and appreciation of key concepts and skills
involving numbers and number sense as applied, using appropriate technology in critical
thinking, problem solving, reasoning, communicating, making connections, representations,
and decision in real life.

II. Most Essential Learning Competencies:

The learner will be able to use divisibility rules for numbers 4, 7, 8, 11 and 12 to find
common factors of numbers.

III. Essential Understanding:

A number is divisible by another number when you divide the given number by the other
number and the quotient leaves a 0 remainder. Divisibility tests can be used to find factors
of large whole numbers quickly. Divisibility rules look at the different digits in a given
number. Depending on the digits or combination of digits, you can determine if a number is
divisible by let’s say 2, 3, or 5. This can help us to identify the factors of a number.

IV. Essential Questions:

1. How do you know that a number is divisible by another number?
2. Why is there a need for divisibility rules?

V. Content:
A. Introduction
Drill

The ECSS has 29 568 face mask. If each students should have the same number of
face mask, how many students could there be in the school? (Critical Thnking)

Try completing the statements below. The First one has been done for you.

1. If there are 29 568 patients, every patient gets 1 face mask.

2. If there are 7 392 patients, every patient gets ___ face mask.

3. If there are 4 224 patients, every patient gets ___ face mask.

4. If there are 3 696 patients, every patient gets ___ face mask.

5. If there are 2 688 patients, every patient gets ___ face mask.

6. If there are 2 464 patients, every patient gets ___ face mask.
How do you know that 29 568 can evenly divided by 4, 7, 8, 11, and 12? Explain your
answer. (Communication)

Divisibility rules can be used to easily divide large numbers.

B. Lesson:

A number is divisible by another number when you divide the given

number by the other number and the quotient leaves a 0 remainder.

“Divisible by” means when you divide one number by another, the
result is a whole number. “Divisible by” and “can be evenly divided by”
mean the same thing.

Divisibility tests can be used to find factors of large whole numbers

quickly.

DIVISIBILITY RULES FOR NUMBERS 4, 7, 8, 11, AND 12

A number is divisible by:

4 - If the last two digits of a number are divisible by 4, then that number is a
multiple of 4 and is divisible by 4 completely.

Example:

Take the number 2308. Consider the last two digits i.e. 08. As 08 is divisible by
4, the original number 2308 is also divisible by 4.

Number Divisible? Why?

348 Yes 48 is a multiple of 4

27,616 Yes 16 is a multiple of 4

8,514 No 14 is not a multiple of 4

722 No 22 is not a multiple of 4

The last two digits are 00

1,200 Yes
200 is a multiple of 4

Helper: The multiples of 4 include…

4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 52 56 60

7 - If you double the last digit and subtract it from a number made by the other
digits.
Example:

The result must be divisible by 7.

672 (Double 2 is 4, 67−4=63, and 63÷7=9) Yes
905 (Double 5 is 10, 90−10=80, and 80÷7=11 3/7) No
Helper: The multiples of 7 include…
7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63 70 77 84 91 98 105 . . .

8 - If the last three digits of a number are divisible by 8, then the number is
completely divisible by 8.

Example:

Take number 24344. Consider the last two digits i.e. 344. As 344 is divisible by
8, the original number 24344 is also divisible by 8.

Helper: The multiples of 8 include…

8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80 88 96 104 112 120 …

11 - If you add and subtract digits in an alternating pattern (add digit, subtract
next digit, add next digit, etc.). Then check if that answer is divisible by 11.

Example:

1364 (+1−3+6−4 = 0) Yes

913 (+9−1+3 = 11) Yes
987 (+9−8+7 = 8) No

Helper: The multiples of 11 include…

11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 99 110 121 132 143 . . .

12 - If the number is divisible by both 3 and 4 (it passes both the 3 rule and 4 rule
above)

Example:

648 (By 3? 6+4+8=18 and 18÷3=6) Yes

(By 4? 48÷4=12 Yes) both pass, so Yes

524 (By 3? 5+2+4=11, 11÷3= 3 2/3) No

(Don't need to check by 4) No

Helper: The multiples of 12 include…

12 24 36 48 60 72 84 96 108 120 132 144 156 168 . . .

“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our lord Jesus Christ, that all of you
C.
agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same
mind and the same judgement.” 1 Corinthians 1:10
Integration:
As an ECSSian, it is important to know that the divisibility rules can be served as
your tool in dividing numbers easily. In real life situation, you may also set rules to
follow, to organize and do tasks accordingly.
D. Closure:

Divisibility rules look at the different digits in a given number. Depending on the
digits or combination of digits, you can determine if a number is divisible by for example
2, 3, or 5. This can help us to identify the factors of a number. Divisibility rules can be
used to easily divide large numbers.
Thank you Jesus for the divisibility rules.
Thank you Jesus I am organized.
