Task SPSS Command

Data Manipulation/Working with SPSS Environment:


Switching between data view and Click the buttons at the bottom of the
variable view: SPSS window.
Or,
Use the menus: View  Data, or View  Variable.
Creating a new data set or Go to File  New  Data, or File  New 
output file: Output. (SPSS automatically creates a new output
file when you open the program.)
Inserting a new variable: 1. In Variable view  right-click the number of the
variable beneath where you want to create the
new one  then click Insert Variable.
2. In Data view  right click the number of the
variable to the right of where you want to create
the new one  then click insert variable.
3. In Variable view  select the variable beneath
where you want to create the new one  then

click the Insert Variable button on the


toolbar.
4. In Variable view  select the variable beneath
where you want to insert the new one  then go
to Edit  Insert Variable.
Deleting Variables: Right-click/Command-click the variable name in
Data view  or the variable’s number in Variable
view  select Clear from the menu.
(Please be careful when deleting variables, as this is
one of the commands that SPSS cannot undo).
Sorting Variable In Data View, right click the name of the variable by
which you wish to sort, and then select either “Sort
Ascending” or “Sort Descending.”
Going to a Specific Go to Edit  Go to Variable or Edit  Go to Case in
Case/Variable the menu, or you can click on the Go To Variable

button or the Go To Case button in the


toolbar. (Note that you can switch between them
within the Go To box.)
Compute New Variable/Total Go to Transform  Compute Variable. Type the new
Scores variable (Use the commands with in the box) = Old
Variable +/-, then hit OK.
Data Analysis Commands:
Descriptive Statistics There are two days to it.
1. Go to analyse  Descriptive Statistics 
Frequencies  Hit the Statistics Button  Select
the Statistics that you want.
2. Go to analyse  Descriptive Statistics 
Descriptive  Choose the Variable  Select the
Options and then continue  OK.
Cross tabulation Go to Analyze  Descriptive Statistics Cross tabs.
Correlation Go to Analyse  Correlate  Bivariate
Linear Regression Go to Analyse  Regression  Linear
Independent Samples t-Test Go to Analyze  Compare Means  Independent
Samples t-Test.
Paired Samples t-Test Go to Analyze  Compare Means  Paired Samples
t-Test.
One-way Analysis of Variance Go to Analyze  Compare Means  One-way
(ANOVA) ANOVA.
Two (or More) – Way ANOVA Go to Analyze  Generalised Linear Model 
Univariate.
Reliability Analysis Go to Analyse  Scale  Reliability Analysis
