PURPOSE
Group minimum standard to assure compliance with criteria to ensure SGS employees operate powered
industrial equipment in a safe manner compliant with regulatory requirements.
The requirements stated below fully meet Group minimum standards and expectations. All SGS Operations and
Functions shall comply with this Group Minimum Standard and ensure that it is fully implemented within the
corresponding local Level 3 Procedure.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Managers/Supervisors, Operational Integrity personnel, or any employee conducting an OIMS gap analysis.
WHAT SITUATIONS ARE/ARE NOT COVERED?
These requirements apply to all personnel, including employees, clients, and contractors, on SGS locations or
locations operated by SGS.
These requirements do not apply to Client employees operating on their own sites.
NOTE: Mandatory elements are in orange sections.
GROUP MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1. ACCOUNTABILITIES
All applicable personnel shall be held accountable for complying with SGS Group and local legal
requirements.
Manager/Supervisor shall:
Communicate the requirements of this procedure to all affected employees under their supervision.
Ensure this procedure is implemented and adhered to.
Ensure proper training is conducted for all powered industrial equipment operators specific to the
equipment they will use.
Ensure that only appropriately trained and certified employees operate equipment.
Operational Integrity shall:
Provide technical support and advice to location management upon request.
Update the contents of this document as necessary.
Employees and Contractors shall:
Comply with SGS Group and local legal requirements.
Be properly trained and certified prior to operating any equipment.
Conduct pre-use inspection of any powered industrial equipment and “red tag” out equipment that
fails the inspection.
Report any incidents or work tasks that might potentially pose hazards to the Manager/ Supervisor.
2. DEFINITIONS
Powered Industrial Truck – Motorized, power driven vehicles, used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack
or tier material. Such as high lift trucks, forklift trucks, motorized hand trucks, fork trucks, platform
industrial vehicles and other specialized trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion
engines.
Unattended – When the operator is 7.6 metres (25 feet) or more from the powered industrial truck
or when the truck is not in the operator’s view.

3. FUEL HANDLING AND STORAGE
Storage and handling of liquid fuels, such as gasoline and diesel fuel shall be in accordance with
local law regulations and the Group Minimum Standard, OI-L2-308 Flammable and Compressed
Gases.
Open flame is prohibited within 15.2 metres (50 feet) of refueling areas with “Flammable Liquids”
warning signs in place.
Leather or rubber gloves shall be worn when refueling liquid propane cylinders or exchanging liquid
propane tanks.
Tanks or forklifts with leaking fuel systems must be “Red Tagged” and removed from service.
Refueling areas shall be equipped with fire extinguishers.
Operator shall shut off engine and dismount before adding fuel.
4. BATTERY CHARGING AND HANDLING
Battery charging installations shall be located in areas designated and equipped for that purpose.
Facilities shall be provided for flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolyte, fire protection, protecting
charging apparatus from damage by trucks, and for adequate ventilation for dispersal of fumes
from gassing batteries.
Proper safety shower / eyewash provision must be present in the charging and service areas.
No source of water shall be allowed in the direct area of charging equipment.
All batteries shall be properly positioned and fastened when reinstalled.
No open flames, sparks or electric arcs shall be allowed in the charging area.
5. INSPECTION
The following procedures and safety rules shall be followed for the maintenance of industrial equipment
and trucks.
An inspection checklist must be completed prior to use each day.
If at any time a powered industrial truck is found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way
unsafe, the truck shall be taken out of service until it has been restored to safe operating condition.
6. MAINTENANCE
All maintenance that is performed on powered equipment shall be done so by competent
maintenance personnel.
7. OPERATION OF FORKLIFTS
Forklifts shall be operated by authorized personnel only.
Seat belts shall be worn at all times when in operation.
The operator shall be alert and cautious of pedestrians and other vehicular traffic.
Operator shall obey all signs and facility traffic regulations.
Loads shall not be lowered or raised while forklift is in motion.
Forklifts shall yield the right of way to pedestrians.
At no time shall passengers be permitted to ride on forklifts.
No one shall walk, work, or stand under the elevated portion of the forklift.

Operator shall ensure forklifts are equipped with a fire extinguisher.
Unattended forklifts shall be parked out of traffic or pedestrian aisles and shall not block safety or
fire protection equipment. The parking brake shall be on, ignition turned off and forks lowered to the
ground.
Operators shall not park forklift on an incline or ramp.
8. OPERATION OF AERIAL LIFTS
Aerial equipment shall only be operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification as
outlined in the Operations Manual.
Only authorized personnel shall operate an aerial lift.
A full body harness shall be worn and a lanyard attached to the basket when working from an aerial
lift.
Employees shall always stand firmly on the floor of the basket and shall not sit or climb on the edge
of the basket or use planks, ladder, or other devices for a work position.
The manufacturer’s boom and basket maximum intended loads shall not be exceeded.
The lift shall not be moved when the boom is elevated in working position unless the lift is
specifically designed to do so.
Articulating boom and extensible boom platforms shall have both platform upper and lower
controls. Controls shall clearly be marked and the lower controls shall not be operated unless
permission is obtained from the employee in the lift except in an emergency.
9. TRAVELLING
Operators shall look in the direction of the travel at all times and maintain a clear view.
Operators shall slow down and sound horn at all blind corners and locations where vision is
obstructed.
When travelling the masts shall be tilted back before lifting a load.
Speed limits shall be honoured at all times.
A spotter must be used in all tight areas.
Operators may not travel side by side.
Whenever travelling in areas where there is two-way traffic, operators must stay to the right
whenever possible, especially around corners to avoid a collision.
Operator shall drive in first gear during slippery conditions.
10. RECORD RETENTION
Records shall be managed and retained as required by the Group Minimum Standard, OI-L2-715
Records Management.
11. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Training shall be managed and conducted as required by the Group Minimum Standard, OI-L2-112
Employee Training, Competency, and Certification.
