INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Department of Education crafted and implemented a curriculum that helps

students enhance their knowledge as well as improve their skills. Programs and
activities were implemented such as Sports, Student Government, Arts, Educational and
Academic Clubs, and Competitions. With these extracurricular activities, students can
learn the values of leadership, teamwork, individuality, physical strength and endurance,
competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community through these activities, in
addition to academic growth (Caparros, 2023).
In the modern world, participating in extracurricular activities is important for a
number of reasons. First of all, these activities help students acquire vital life skills like
time management, cooperation, and communication. Having these abilities is essential
for success in the workplace in a job market that is changing quickly. Extracurricular
activities also give students a place to discover and develop their passions, which
promotes creativity and personal development. Engaging in these kinds of activities also
encourages a holistic approach to education, emphasizing the value of both strong
academic performance and a diverse range of skills in navigating the challenges of
today's complex world (Buckley & Lee, 2019).
Participation in extracurricular activities has generally been shown to be
beneficial for young people’s educational outcomes. Participating in extracurricular
activities helps students learn important skills valued in school (Kravchenko & Nygård,
2023). Students who participate in extracurricular activities have greater academic
success, greater character development, especially in the areas of time-management
and leadership skills, more positive social development, and greater interest in
community involvement (Latif & Pharaswal, 2023).
According to Eccles (2021) those students who participated in intentional, school
based extracurricular activities perform better in school life. This happens due to
Extracurricular activity facilitates better human interaction skills and more passionate
association to one’s school. Participation in out-of-school activities helps develop
students' brains contributing to better mental health. It also helps them fortify their
academic performance for a long period. Extracurricular activities also reduce
behavioral and disciplinary problems.
Furthermore, extracurricular activities promote and practice students' pro social
and interpersonal relationships by allowing them to participate in extracurricular
activities both inside and outside of school. It also assists students avoiding the
negative influence of their "barkada” for extracurricular activities made them ecstatic
and excited to attend (Caparros, 2023).
Students that participate in extracurricular activities have reduced behavior
problems. In practices they show discipline in drills, practices, and routines. They have
a responsibility to perform those tasks correctly. When students perform these things
correctly, they are rewarded for their good behavior and they take pride in their
accomplishments. Because of the pride they achieve, they gain better self-respect, self-
esteem, and self-confidence (Massoni, 2021).
While it's true that extracurricular activities can foster discipline, teamwork, and
character development, t's extremely important to recognize that too many involvements
in such activities can take students away from (related to school and learning)
performance, leading to burnout, tiredness, and (in the end), lower grades.
Despite the positive effects of extracurricular activities on the academic
performance of high school students, there are some potential negative effects. For
example, students who participate in too many extracurricular activities may experience
burnout, which may lead to poorer academic performance. In addition, some
extracurricular activities may require a lot of time or resources, which may interfere with
students' ability to concentrate on their studies. In addition, some extracurricular
activities can lead to negative attitudes toward school and increased stress and anxiety,
which can affect academic performance (Venkataraman & Dheivamani, 2021).
The study by Iqbal et al. (2018) found that guardians and teachers often
discourage students from participating in extracurricular activities, fearing it might
distract them from their studies. They worry that too many activities can lead to less
time for homework, making students irritable, lazy, and less focused in class. Over-
scheduling can also reduce the benefits of extracurricular involvement, as students may
become tired, lazy, and prone to pushing themselves too hard, risking injury. Overall,
over-scheduling requires students to rest more to recover fully from exhaustion.
Even though extracurricular activities have numerous advantages, little is known
about any possible disadvantages, particularly if students participate in them
excessively. Studies that are now available emphasize their benefits for learning and
personal growth, while the drawbacks of overindulging have received less attention.
Research on burnout among highly engaged students, for example, has been lacking
and can result in poorer academic performance and higher levels of stress
(Venkataraman & Dheivamani, 2021). Furthermore, there is a dearth of knowledge on
how to strike a balance between extracurricular activities and academic obligations
(Iqbal et al., 2018; Buckley & Lee, 2019).
This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by examining the
relationship between extracurricular activities and various outcomes. Our goal is to
know how extracurricular activities impact S.P.A. Students’ academic performance
before and after engaging in extracurricular activities. We will also know if there is a
significant difference and compare their academic performance before and after
engaging in extracurricular activities.
Statement of the Problem

In general, this research aimed to investigate the Impact of Extracurricular Activities

to S.P.A. Students to Academic Performance. Specifically, this study sought to answer
the following questions:

1. What is the S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance before engaging in Extra-

curricular activities?
2. What is the S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance after engaging in
Extracurricular Activities?
3. Is there a significant difference on S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance
before and after engaging in Extracurricular activities?

Objectives of the Study

Generally, this study will investigate the Impact of Extracurricular Activities to S.P.A.
Students’ Academic Performance. Specifically, this study aims to:

1. determine the S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance before engaging in

Extracurricular Activities;
2. determine the S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance after engaging in
Extracurricular Activities; and
3. compare S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance before and after engaging in
Extracurricular activities.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Teachers stand to benefit significantly from our study. By delving into the intricate
relationship between extracurricular engagement and academic success within the
Special Program in the Arts (S.P.A), teachers gain valuable insights into tailoring their
instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs and interests of students. Moreover,
our research equips teachers with the ability to identify students who may require
additional support or intervention, thereby enabling them to provide targeted assistance
for academic improvement.
The research findings can provide school administrators with valuable insights
into the impact of extracurricular activities on student outcomes, allowing them to make
informed decisions about program offerings, resource allocation, and support services.
They can also help schools assess the effectiveness of their current extracurricular
programs in supporting student development and academic achievement, identifying
areas for improvement and potential areas of expansion. Research findings provide
insights into the impact of extracurricular activities on student outcomes such as
academic success, character development, time management skills, leadership skills,
social development, and community involvement. This information allows administrators
to prioritize programs that have a positive impact on these outcomes.
The study can provide specific insights into how participation in extracurricular
activities within the arts impacts academic performance for students in specialized arts
programs. This study will offer guidance for students. This research will also help
students understand the balance between artistic pursuits and academic demands to
help students in S.P.A. programs optimize their schedules to effectively manage both
areas of their education. This research study will also help them to understand the
relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance, which can
prompt students to reflect on their current study habits. They may identify areas for
improvement and implement more effective study techniques, ultimately leading to
enhanced learning and academic success.
This research will be a useful reference for future researchers who would plan to
make any related study. It may serve as a guide to gather information, and it may serve
as building blocks for a larger study. This study will also serve as their cross-reference
that will give them a background or an overview of The Impact of Extracurricular
Activities on S.P.A. Students’ Academic Performance.
