Numerators and Denominators

This document provides tasks for students to practice ordering fractions using a widget. It includes tasks to make proper and improper fractions, test when the numerator equals, is less than or greater than the denominator, and make fractions equal to 1/2, 1, and 2.

NUMERATORS AND DENOMINATORS

Use the widget Comparing numerators and denominators from

this lesson to help complete these tasks.

TASK 1 Make proper fractions

Move the sliders to form several proper fractions (numerator smaller than denominator).
Describe the position of all these numbers on the number line.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Complete this sentence using either ‘greater than’ or ‘less than’:

Proper fractions are all ____________________ one.

TASK 2 Make improper fractions

Move the sliders to form several improper fractions (numerator larger than denominator).
Describe the position of all these numbers on the number line.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Complete this sentence using either ‘greater than’ or ‘less than’:

Improper fractions are all ____________________ one.

TASK 3 Test numerator = denominator

Place the numerator slider and denominator slider in line with each other near the middle of their slides.

1 What fraction did you form?

2 What is the number on the number line?

TASK 4 Test numerator < denominator

Move the numerator slider to the left.

1 Have you made a proper fraction or an improper fraction?
2 Watch the number line and describe what happens to the size of the fraction as you move this slider
to the left ie as the numerator gets smaller.

TASK 5 Test numerator > denominator

Bring the numerator slide back to the centre. Now move the numerator slider to the right.
1 Have you made a proper fraction or an improper fraction?
2 Watch the number line and describe what happens to the size of the fraction as you move this slider
to the right ie as the numerator gets larger.

TASK 6 Test denominator < numerator

Bring the numerator slider back to the centre. Move the denominator slider to the left.
1 Have you made a proper fraction or an improper fraction?
2 Watch the number line and describe what happens to the size of the fraction as you move this slider
to the left ie as the denominator gets smaller.

TASK 7 Test denominator > numerator

Slide the denominator slider to the right past the numerator.

1 What fraction have you made?
2 Have you made a proper fraction or an improper fraction?
3 Watch the number line and describe what happens to the size of the fraction as you move this slider
to the right ie as the denominator gets larger.

TASK 8 Make fractions equal to a half, 1 and 2

For this task you can move both sliders.

1 Record three different fractions that give 1 on the number line.
Complete this sentence using either greater than, less than or equal to:
For the fraction to be equal to 1, the numerator must be ___________________ the denominator.
2 Move the sliders so that you make a fraction equivalent to a half. What is the fraction?
What is another fraction you can make that is equivalent to a half?
______________________________________________________________________________
3 Move the sliders so that you make a fraction equivalent to two. What is the fraction?
What is another fraction you can make that is equivalent to a two?
