Lesson 1: Economics Translation Problems from English to Arabic or the Reverse

1. Problems in EconomicTranslation
The translation of economic expressions and texts is not a simple task in that the language
of economy is a broad concept, which includes vocabulary reflecting various spheres such as
business, management, commerce, banking, etc. In addition, it includes the language of
negotiations, presentations, production meetings and business correspondence reflecting
national and cultural specifics. Therefore, translation of economic terminology is one of the
most meticulous and time-consuming translation which requires extreme attention and
concentration. Economic texts have specialized terminology. It is, then, necessary for
translators to consider not only the textual components, but also the comprehensive
sociocultural context and a broad understanding of economics, in order to generate a high-
quality translation (Dominguez and Rokowski, 2002).
Among the difficult domains which can indeed pose challenges in economic translation,
we can list : economic metaphors, abbreviations and acronyms.
Metaphors, abbreviations and acronyms, commonly used in economic texts, present
another hurdle. Some are universal, while others are specific to certain regions or industries.
Maintaining their meaning while ensuring clarity in translation is crucial. A wrong
interpretation or misreading of an acronym can significantly alter the intended message.
Therefore, these challenges require a translator with a strong grasp of both the economic
concepts and the nuances of languages involved to convey the intended meaning accurately.
