The students will read the poem aloud.

E. Lesson Proper
The teacher will discuss the differences
between facts and opinions through a poem
entitled “Fact or Opinion by Jenny Capps.”
Fact or Opinion
Jenny Capps
A FACT is a fact, now let’s take a look
Pull it up your computer, or open up your
book!
It’s something that is proven, something we
all know
Like, “A dog has four legs.” Or “How does
a garden grow?”
You may need to do some research, or you
just might use
You eye. Either way you’ll find the answer,
because FACTS
Will never lie
If you can look upon to see it, then you
know it must be
true. “The shirt she has on is green.” and
“The sky a shade of blue.”
Lesson Plan
English 7

It’s really very easy to know what a FACTS

about.
Just look, read about, or Google it, then it’s
a FACT no
doubt!
Now OPINIONS are a little sneakier, it’s
what you think
or feel. Like green is a “pretty” color, and
pizza’s my
“favorite” meal.
Or “I think” that dress is pretty, and football
is the “greatest”
sport. But others “think” it’s basketball…
because it’s played
on a court.
“I believe” is another clue, that an
OPINION is what it might
be. Some “believe” that Christmas is best…
but
Thanksgivings the best for me!
So when you have a feeling, and you think
it must be true.
Remember… that’s actually not a fact… it’s
only an OPINION for you!

Drills
The teacher will group the students into four. Each
group will be given an emoji. The teacher will flash a
certain statement and the students will distinguish
whether it’s a fact or opinion. The happy emoji
corresponds to facts and the sad emoji corresponds to
statements that are opinions. Fact
Sample Questions:
1.Mother Theresa has dedicated her life in helping Opinion
the poor. Opinion
2. The sweetest dessert after meal is an ice cream.
3. Basketball game catches the greatest number of
televiewers.

Generalization:
How can we distinguish facts from opinions? Facts can be proven while opinions are just
based on someone’s feelings or thoughts.

statements that are facts and underline the statements
