JUNIO 2023 - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - CONTENT: MICAELA E. BERTOYA

Dear colleagues,

Welcome! In this issue you will find lots of ideas, photocopiable activities and ready-to-use
material related to the topic COLOURS. We have prepared a whole edition based on a topic our
students start exploring at a very early stage of their learning process and revise and integrate all
throughout their language learning life. This group of words might be approached through different
angles and this is why we included flashcards, experiments, colouring activities, stories reviews, and
much more!!!
Learning a second or foreign language is not an easy task. Classrooms are getting more and more
heterogeneous and modern teachers have less and less time to prepare their
materials and keep up with their students’ intellectual demands. We
would like to help and guide teachers by providing a few ideas
that will make your teaching task easier.
We hope you find it useful and include these
ideas in your classes!!!

16. CHILDREN’S LITERATURE: COLOURS
In this section, you will find recommended titles of children’s books that deal
with the topic of colours and a brief synopsis for each of them.

Did you know that monsters love to scribble,

scribble, mix, dance, and wiggle?! Why? Because
monsters love to make new colours!

Celebrate along with the hilarious monsters in

this wild and energetic picture book. Mixing and
discovering colour has never been so much fun!

Exuberantly coloured artwork and favourite

animals make this rhythmic story the perfect
introduction to looking and learning about
colours. Each spread leads seamlessly into the
next and young children will delight in Eric’s
colourful collage animals and simple repetitive
language.

In the beginning, there were three colours . . .

Reds, Yellows, and Blues. All special in their own
ways, all living in harmony―until one day, a Red
says “Reds are the best!” and starts a colour
kerfuffle. When the colours decide to separate,
is there anything that can change their minds?
A Yellow, a Blue, and a never-before-seen
colour might just save the day in this inspiring
book about colour, tolerance, and embracing
differences.
The Total English Magazine ▶ Colours ▶

One day, Colour Monster wakes up feeling very

confused. His emotions are all over the place;
he feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared
all at once! To help him, a little girl shows him
what each feeling means through colour. As this
adorable monster learns to sort and define his
mixed-up emotions, he gains self-awareness
and peace as a result.

“It’s a pillar,” says one. “It’s a fan,” says another.
One by one, the seven blind mice investigate
the strange Something by the pond. And one
by one, they come back with a different theory.
It’s only when the seventh mouse goes out-and
explores the whole Something-that the mice
see the whole truth. Based on a classic Indian
tale, Ed Young’s beautifully rendered version is a
treasure to enjoy again and again.

Little Blue and Little Yellow are best friends, but

one day they can’t find each other. When they
finally do, they give each other such a big hug
that they turn green! How they find their true
colours again concludes a wonderfully satisfying
story told with colourful pieces of torn paper
and very few words.

Poor Duncan just wants to colour. But when he

opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters,
all saying the same thing: His crayons have had
enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of
playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black
wants to be used for more than just outlining.
Blue needs a break from colouring all those
bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no
longer speaking—each believes he is the true
colour of the sun. What can Duncan possibly do
to appease all of the crayons and get them back
to doing what they do best?

Accept Hervé Tullet’s irresistible invitation to

mix it up in a dazzling adventure of whimsy and
wonder. Follow the artist’s simple instructions,
The Total English Magazine ▶ Colours ▶

and suddenly colours appear, mix, splatter,

and vanish in a world powered only by the
reader’s imagination. Tullet sets readers on an
extraordinary interactive journey all within the
printed page.

Pete the Cat goes walking down the street
wearing his brand-new white shoes. Along the
way, his shoes change from white to red to
blue to brown to WET as he steps in piles of
strawberries, blueberries, and other big messes!
But no matter what colour his shoes are, Pete
keeps movin’ and groovin’ and singing his song...
because it’s all good. Pete the Cat: I Love My
White Shoes asks the reader questions about
the colours of different foods and objects.

Colours, colours everywhere! Can you find

colours just like Bear? Karma Wilson’s playful
text and Jane Chapman’s adorable illustrations
creatively introduce colours to the youngest
Bear fans, who will delight in discovering a
rainbow of fun.

One day three white mice discover three jars of

paint: red, blue, and yellow. Walsh’s cut-paper
collage illustrations have bold colours and just
the right simplicity for the storyline.

This simple rhymed riff about colour is illustrated

with art from some of the most beloved and

colourful works by Dr. Seuss. A not-to-be-

missed classic!
