INTRODUCTION
Definition: A matrix is an ordered rectangular array of numbers or
functions. The numbers or functions are called the elements or the
entries of the matrix.

In the above examples, the horizontal lines of elements are said to

constitute, rows of the matrix and the vertical lines of elements are
said to constitute, columns of the matrix. Thus A has 3 rows and 2
columns, B has 3 rows and 3 columns while C has 2 rows and 3 columns.

Order of Matrix: A matrix having m rows and n columns is called

a matrix of order m × n or simply m × n matrix (read as an m by n
matrix). So referring to the above examples of matrices, we have A
as 3 × 2 matrix, B as 3 × 3 matrix and C as 2 × 3 matrix. We observe
that A has 3 × 2 = 6 elements, B and C have 9 and 6 elements,
respectively.
TYPES OF MATRICES

NAME OF GENERAL FORM

MATRIX
Row Matrix A=[aij]1 × n

Square matrix
A = [aij]m × 1

Column Matrix
A = [aij]m × n where, m=n

Diagonal matrix A=[aij]m × m where aij = 0, when i ≠ j

Scalar matrix A = [aij]m × n where, aij = 0, when i ≠ j aij = k, when i = j

(k is some constant)

Identity matrix A = [aij]m × n where, aij = 0, when i ≠ j aij = 1, when i = j

Zero matrix A = [aij]m × n where, aij = 0

Symmetric matrix A = [aij] where, aij = aji

Skew symmetric A = [aij] where, aij = -aji

APPLICATIONS OF
MATRICES
MATRIX IN PHYSICS:
 In physics related applications,
matrices are applied in the study
of electrical circuits, quantum
mechanics and optics.
 In the calculation of battery
power outputs, resistor conversion
of electrical energy into another
useful energy, these matrices play
a major role in calculations.
 Especially in solving the problems
using Kirchhoff’s laws of voltage
and current, the matrices are
essential.

MATRIX IN COMPUTER SCIENCE:

 In computer based applications,
matrices play a vital role in the
projection of three dimensional
image into a two dimensional
screen creating the realistic
seeming motions.
 Eigen vectors solvers are used in
the page rank algorithms which
are used in the ranking of web
pages in the google search.
 Graphic software uses matrix
mathematics to process liner
transformations to render images.
MATRIX IN ENCRYPTION:
 One of the most important uses of matrices are encryption of
message code

 A message is made as a sequence of numbers in a binary format

for communication and it follows code theory for solving. Hence
with the help of matrices, those equations are solved
 With these encryptions only, internet functions are working and
even banks could work with transmission of sensitive and private
data.

MATRIX IN MATHEMATICS:
 Matrices are effective in solving linear equations using inverse
of matrix. This method of solving system of equations is known
as Matrix Method.
 In finding the area of triangle whose vertices have been given,
matrices are useful.
Let’s suppose that we have a triangle ABC with vertices
A(X1,Y1) ,B(X2,Y2),C(X3,Y3)

 Matrix is used to check whether the given three points are

collinear or not. To be collinear, the area of triangle formed by
three points not form a triangle.
MATRIX IN COMPUTER GRAPHICS & CONSTRUCTION:

MATRIX IN OTHER USES:

 In geology, matrices are used for taking seismic surveys.
 Matrices are used in
representing the real world
data’s like the traits of
the people’s population,
habits, etc.
 In robotics and
automation, matrices are
the base elements for
robot movements.
 Matrices are used in many
organisations such as for
scientists for recording
the data for their
experiments.
 Matrices play a vital role
in chess board
programming, representing
longitudes and latitudes
and determining pixels of
TV, etc.
JAGANNATH TEMPLE, PURI:
 The Shree Jagannath Temple
is an important Hindu temple
dedicated to Jagannath, a form
of Vishnu, in Puri in the state of
Odisha on the eastern coast of
India. The present temple was
rebuilt from the 10th century
onwards, on the site of an
earlier temple, and begun by
King Anantavarman Chodaganga
Deva, first of the Eastern
Ganga dynasty.
 The Puri temple is famous for its annual Ratha yatra, or chariot
festival, in which the three principal deities are pulled on huge and
elaborately decorated temple cars. It is one of the Char Dham.

Q.1) Mrs. Gavaskar purchased one wooden Jagannath Temple for

Rs. 3450 and two terracotta pot for Rs.265 each. Using MATRIX
method find the amount paid by Mrs. Gavskar to the shopkeeper?
JUTE CRAFT:
 Jute or the golden
fiber is one of the
most affordable
natural fibers of
Odisha. The fibers
are off-white to
brown, and 1–4
metres (3–13 feet)
long. In the eco
friendly era, the Jute
fibers are in huge
demand for decorative and utility products such as bags, file
folders, wall hangings etc.

2. Mrs. Joshi purchased one handicraft of lord Jagannath , Balbhadra

and Subhadra for Rs. 2100, and three jute bags for Rs. 310 each
and a set of filigree jewellery for Rs.6450.Using MATRIX method
find the amount paid by Mrs .Joshi to the shopkeeper.
KHAJA AND CHHENA PODA:
 Khaja is believed to have
originated from the eastern parts
of the former state of Oudh and
the former United Provinces of
Agra and Oudh. This area
presently corresponds to eastern
districts of Uttar Pradesh and
Western districts of Bihar and is
also native to state of Odisha
 Chhena poda (Burned cheese) is a
cheese dessert from the Indian
state of Odisha. Chhena poda
literally means Roasted Cheese in
Odia.

3. Mr. Joshi purchased one 1kg Khaja a crispy sweet dish for Rs. 180
per kg and 500 gm Chhena Poda at the rate of Rs.350 per kg. from
Mahapatra Sweetmart, Using MATRIX method find the amount paid
by Mr. Joshi to the shopkeeper?
PIPLI APPLIQUÉ WORK:
The village of Pipili, Puri
district, Odisha, India, is
well known for its appliqué
work. "Appliqué" comes from
the French word appliquer,
meaning "to put on". There
are two variants to this
technique: appliqué, where a
fabric shape is sewn over a base layer, and reverse appliqué,
wherein two layers of fabric are laid down, and a shape is
subsequently cut out from the upper layer, exposing the lower
layer, before both are stitched together. It is one of the
products which has been granted Geographical Indication (GI)
by the government of India (Application No. 86 and 108).

4. Mr. Joshi purchased three Applique lanterns, one Pipli Applique

garden umbrella and four Pipli Applique work bag and Mr. Gavaskar
purchased four Applique lanterns, two Pipli Applique garden
umbrella and three Pipli Applique work bag. The cost of one lantern
is Rs.575, one garden umbrella is Rs. 1675 and one bag is 415.
Using MATRIX method find the amount paid by Mr. Joshi and
Mr.Gavaskar to the shopkeeper?
