Questions

Instructions: Answer the 8 questions with a minimum of 50 words for each one.

1. Questions for “What do you know?”

a. In your own understanding, what is Art?
- There is no universal definition of arts because it usually depends on
the artist how they want their art to be defined or interpreted. So, in my
own understanding, art is a medium or a way to express one’s self,
emotions, thoughts, etc. which may be through visual arts, performing
arts, or literary arts. It is a form of communication that reflects various
cultures and traditions known all over the world. A certain art can be
seen as beautiful or ugly depending on the person who is viewing it,
this the subjective interpretation of art.

b. Explain the reason why you gave that answer? What was in your mind?
- The definition of art throughout our schooling were all different but they
all had a common ground- that it is a medium for expression or a form
of communication from the artist to its viewers. That is why I gave the
answer above and just added some of the learnings I previously had
during my high school lessons in arts. And it is true that we create art
or an artwork to express something and it could be influenced by our
traditions, culture, etc.

2. Questions for lesson activity

a. Can you draw a conclusion from this caricature inspired from the painting
of Michael Angelo?
- The caricature inspired from the painting of Michael Angelo is quite
different from the original. First, in the original painting, it shows the
whole bodies of the two people who are there. Meanwhile, in the
caricature, it only shows the upper part of their bodies. Also in the
original painting, their index fingers were stretched out to reach each
other but in the caricature, it was their elbows. Lastly, the major
difference was the caricature was really a modernized version and it
relates to the present condition of the world which will be explained
further below.

b. How can you relate art to our present pandemic situation?

- The main relation of the caricature to our present pandemic situation is
that we can see one person in the painting wearing a mask and the
distance between them is farther compared to the original painting
where the two were almost touching fingers. In the caricature, they are
socially-distanced from one another and uses their elbows and not
their hands to avoid contamination of the virus.

3. Questions for Assessment

a. What value/s did you discover from the lesson?
- The values I have learned or discovered from this lesson is to become
realistic. It was discussed in the module that imitationism is an
aesthetic theory which states that artworks should be realistic or close
to reality. Plato states that if an art or artwork is not close to reality or
not realistic, it may cause an illusion that doesn’t exist and it makes the
art a dangerous delusion. That’s why I’ve learned to be realistic so that
our views in life will not be idealistic or something that is not attainable
or reachable.

b. How can that value/s help you become a better individual?

- As I have mentioned above, being realistic helps you become a better
individual in a way that it prevents you from being disappointed
whenever things don’t go your way and it also helps you prepare for
the worst-case scenario. You don’t expect things to always be perfect
because you are realistic and you know that nothing is perfect in this
world. Unlike when you are idealistic, you always expect things to be
perfect so when things don’t go as planned, you are easily
disappointed.

4. Questions for reflection

a. What significant lesson did you find it personal?
- One significant lesson I found personal in this module is that the
representational theory states that the fundamental, definitive quality of
art is the ability to capture some aspect of reality. In short, if it's not a
reflection of something that actually exists, then it's not art. This means
that art can be defined foremost as an extension of our perception; it's
a way to reflect the ways that our mind perceives and understands
reality.
b. In what part of the lesson did you find easy or hard to illustrate in the way
that you learned? Why?
- In this module, we have learned about the imitation theory of art and
beauty, it was quite easy to understand. The imitation theory states
that it is important for an artwork or art to be realistic or close to reality.
It is also stated there that art or artworks are just imitation of the
appearance of reality. It is important for an artwork to be realistic so
that there will be no fake illusions that portray something that doesn’t
exist in the real world.
