Mock Exam 1 : All Streams 2BAC : 2024 Sara English

(1) The 8th of September marks a catastrophe in the

history of Morocco. In that day, an earthquake
struck the region of Alhouz , exactly in Ighil and other
regions like Chichaoua and Taroudant. The
Earthquake was of a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter
scale. Only lasted for 20 seconds but was long
enough to destroy many houses and historical
monuments and to cost around 3000 victims and
5000 injuries. Alhouz Earthquake is considered the
strongest and most deadly in Moroccan history
since 1960. It was too strong that it was even felt in Spain and Algeria. WHO has estimated that
about 300 thousand people were affected by this disaster.
(2) Some of the regions which were damaged were located along difficult roads which made it
difficult for the rescuers and ambulances to reach the victims. As a result, many of the civilians
used their barre hands to dig the destroyed houses to rescue their family or neighbors. After some
days, the situation became even more challenging in some villages. People couldn’t receive any
help from the government due to the blockage of roads caused by landslides. That’s why people
were psychologically affected as they saw their family’s dead bodies but unable to bury them.
(3) Few days later, Morocco faced many difficulties
reaching and helping the survivors of the earthquake.
Civilians were in urgent need of basic supplies such as
food, tents, water, and clothes. For this reason, social
media played a huge role in spreading the news and their
needs. As a result, many famous influencers on TikTok
and Instagram worked together, using their fame, to help
people in dangerous situations. They informed their
followers about the voluntary work that they wanted to do.
Moroccan people showed a huge act of solidarity and
cooperation as they all helped with providing clothes, tents and other supplies needed.
(4) Fortunately, the situation got slightly better. What’s more, Muhammed 6 showed a strong
compassion towards his people when he donated his blood along with most of Moroccans
including the national team of Morocco. At the end of November, the king gave orders to provide
the affected people with financial assistance which reached 140 000 DH and 2500 dh monthly
for a year. This aid aims at helping them reconstruct their destroyed houses.
(5) This earthquake reminds us of the importance of cooperation between people and solidarity. The
entire world was shocked by how people in Morocco reacted and helped others in need.
