BIG IDEA #1 CHANGING YOUR LENS

but it’s not the end. I went on a diet a month ago but…well, let’s just put it
this way…I’m not on a diet anymore.
Real success comes when the lights aren’t on—in the
corner of the gym, after everyone else has gone to
bed. It’s not a specific tactic or hack—it’s a mindset.

Or in particular—it’s a series of mindsets. Success

comes from changing the lens with which you view
the world. Some “experts” call this the law of attrac-
tion—but there’s more to it than that. What happened? Why did you stop?

You need to have the right lens. You need to change I committed to the habit, but when it became difficult,

our past, but only insofar as we let the past define our
present reality. It all lives in our head. I’d like to be a millionaire for sure.

And once we understand that reality—it’s easier to

consciously choose our future. But what future will
it be? Will your future self be proud of what you’re
doing right now?

HOW LONG IS TOO LONG?

It’s important to note that imagining too far into the

future is not helpful, nor is focusing too much on the
present moment. The sweet spot, then, is about 5
years from now. It’s close enough that you can feel
yourself making progress—but it’s not so far away
that you can’t even imagine getting there.

rying about them accomplishes nothing. I have ADHD.

The trick is to use your circumstances to your advan-

tage, no matter what they are.

I’m older, in my professional life, I’m often able to quickly
notice when I’m not paying attention. This is extreme
self-awareness, which is obviously valuable.

Discomfort is your friend. You need to consciously, What is something that you are scared of?
almost obsessively even, attack discomfort as if it

of your comfort zone.

In fact, if you are not pushing your boundaries by

viewing discomfort as a positive, as food for your
growth, you will be left behind by your peers who are
pushing themselves.

Find something that makes you uncomfortable—and ACTIVITY:

do it. This is the way to mastery.

Pick a place/time when you are going to attack this

discomfort. How can you overcome it immediately
by ripping off the bandage of your self-doubt?

NOTE

This could be a massive change or it

could be as simple as a difficult con-
versation that you’ve been putting

than success, in order to challenge himself.
I’ve always wanted to sail from Seattle to Portland.

WHY IS THIS VALUABLE?

Doing a Misogi teaches you that you can do anything.

Whenever you’re faced with a difficult challenge, for
the rest of your life, you’ll be able to look back and
say “if I did that—I can do this.”

It’s a tool. Finishing the Misogi is not the goal in of

itself—it should instead be used as a stepping stool.

Examples of Misogis are:

Run a marathon.

Swim a mile.

Bike for 100 miles.

Ask a stranger out on a date. Ask 100 strangers out!

Go on a 50 mile day hike.

Camp out in the middle of nowhere for a weekend.

Don’t go online for an entire week.

Write a novella.

articles, going to happy hour after work, eating junk food.

BIG IDEA #10 GENEROSITY

PRINCIPLE APPLICATION TO LIFE

So you’ve changed your mindsets—but why? What is your big WHY? Why are you here? What do
you want to impart?
When the going gets tough (and it will), what will
keep you going? What is your big WHY? My family. My entire goal in life is to take care of my chil-
dren and give them more opportunity than I was given…
Sten argues that the best chance you have of keeping
motivated is to frame your entire life as a chance to
give to others.

How can you incorporate generosity and gratitude

into your daily routine?
