Indonesia YSEALI Regional Workshop 2024:

Sustainable and Inclusive Cultural Tourism in

a Post-COVID World
Application

All fields marked with * are required and must be filled.

Welcome to the application for the YSEALI Regional Workshop on Sustainable and Inclusive
Cultural Tourism in a Post-COVID World.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the vulnerability of Southeast Asian economies, especially, for
micro-, small and medium-sized tourism enterprises (MSMEs) reliant on leisure travelers. They
suffered due to a sharp decline in inbound tourists, causing substantial economic setbacks and
increased poverty.

Many nations are now trying to encourage the return of these tourists with a focus on cultural
tourism, including local heritage sites, food, festivals, and attractions, to enhance destination
competitiveness and national brand identity.

This workshop aims to encourage young leaders to talk about sustainable and inclusive tourism
issues and to create space and dialogue among young people to strengthen their networks and
communities across Southeast Asia. Moreover, selected participants will have support in
developing and implementing relevant projects after the workshop through a small grant
mechanism and follow-on mentoring.

The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is a highly competitive cultural exchange
program for Southeast Asian emerging leaders launched by former President Barack Obama. The
initiative aims to strengthen leadership development, networking, and cultural exchange among
emerging leaders from ASEAN member-states and Timor Leste.

YSEALI programs fall under the key core themes of civic engagement, sustainable development,
economic development, and the environment.

record yourself presenting your response to the below prompt:

Prompt: What does cultural tourism look like in your community or country? What are the
challenges to making your community or country's cultural tourism more sustainable and
inclusive? What big ideas do you have to address these challenges?

Video Tips

Your video presentation should show your communication skills: the ability to capture and hold an
audience’s attention, and ability to speak with clarity, brevity and structure.

A strong video takes time and practice, so please plan to devote plenty of time into its
preparation.

Do not waste time on aesthetics such as excessive editing, visual effects, music or other
elaborate elements, as they will not factor into the evaluation.

Your video should primarily feature you and your ideas.

Please keep the duration under 3 minutes.

When recording, check your video quality settings. Remember, higher quality video and sound
does not necessarily strengthen your application.

If you are having difficulty due to lack of reliable internet, try uploading your submission from a
different computer or try another location with stronger connection such as an internet café.

If you are continuing to experience problems or have other technical difficulties please contact
Asia Foundation staff at [email protected].

Once you have recorded your video please upload to a video hosting website such as YouTube or
Google Drive, and paste the shareable link below. If you are sharing a YouTube link, please make
sure the video is set as either unlisted or public, not private. If you are sharing a Google Drive link,
please make sure you click "Share" then "Copy Link."
