PODAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (CBSE)
Class test (Answer Scheme)
Std: IX Topic: Matter in our Surroundings
Subject: Chemistry Mks : 25
Q. no. Mks.
Q1. Name the physical state of matter which cannot be easily compressed. [1]
Ans: Solid state.
Q2. When 50 gms of sugar is dissolved in 100 ml water, there is no increase [1]
in volume. What characteristics of matter are illustrated by this
observation?
Ans: Particles of water have spaces between them.
Q.3 Why do the gases exert more pressure on the walls of the container than [2]
the solids?
Ans: In gases, particles move randomly at high speed and 1
they collide with each other and with the walls of the container. 1
Q.4 Why don’t solid substances diffuse? [1]
Ans: Due to strong intermolecular forces.
Q .5 Why do the doctors advise to put strips of wet cloth on the forehead of a [3]
person having high fever?
Ans: When a person has fever, his body temperature becomes more than 1
the normal body temperature.
If we put strips of wet cloth on the forehead of a person suffering 1
from high fever, the water evaporates taking heat from the body.
Thus moist strips will lower his body temperature. 1
Q. 6 You are given the following substances with their melting and boiling [3]
points :
Substance melting Point (° C) Boiling point (°C)
X -219 -183
Y 119 445
Z -15 78
Identify the physical states of X, Y and Z at room temperature (30° C).
Ans: X is gas
Y is solid
Z is liquid.
Q. 7 Comment on the following statements :
Evaporation produces cooling. [2]
Ans: As the particles at the surface of the liquid gain energy from the 1
surroundings and change into vapour,
Thereby producing a cooling effect. 1
Q.8 Write the chemical name of dry ice. Justify its name. How is it stored? [2]
Ans: Chemical name of dry ice –solid CO2. ½
It looks like ice but is different.
Solid CO2 converts directly to gaseous state on decreasing 1
pressure to one atmosphere without coming into liquid state.
It is stored at high pressure. ½
Q. 9 Distinguish between solids and gases on the basis of following [3]
parameters
i. Interparticle distance
ii. Interparticle force of attraction.
iii. Compressibility.
Ans:
S.No. Solids gases
1 Interparticle space is Interparticle space is
less so the distance maximum so the
is less. distance is more.
2 Interparticle force of Interparticle force of
attraction is attraction is
maximum. minimum.
3 Solids are rigid and Gases are not rigid
non – compressible. and they are
compressible.
Q.10 Define the following terms : [2]
i Rigidity
Ans: Rigidity: It is the property of matter to maintain shape against
external force.
ii. Compressibility
Ans: Compressibility : It is the property by virtue of which molecules of
matter are brought close to each other
Q. 11 [5]
i. Explain with the help of an activity which shows that particles of matter 2
are very small.
ii. Define matter. Name the states of matter in which the forces between the 1+1
constituents particles are :
(a) strongest (b) weakest
iii. When sugar and common salt are kept in different jars, they take the 1
shape of the jars. Are they solid? Justify your answer.
Ans:
i. Take 2 – 3 crystals of copper sulphate and dissolve in 100 ml of
water.
Take out approximate 10 ml of this solution and put it into 90 ml of 1
clear water.
Take out 10 ml of this solution and put it into another 90 ml of clear ½
water.
Keep diluting for 5 – 8 times.
Inference : A crystal of copper sulphate contains millions of tiny ½
particles which keeps on dividing into smaller and smaller numbers
with each dilution.
ii. Anything which possesses mass and occupies space is called
matter.
(a) Soild --- strongest (b) gas --- weakest
iii. The shape of each individual sugar or salt crystal remains fixed.
Therefore, they are solids.
