GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
All: Your name is above every name, O God, we will worship you in the splendor
of holiness.
One: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
All: May the Lord give strength to your people, O God, may the Lord bless your
people with peace.
One: Let us worship God!

*Hymn
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

2
Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Prayer of Confession
One: Let us prepare our hearts to confess to the God who calls to us, to the Christ who
leads us, and to the Spirit guides us in our response. Let us now confess to the one
triune God. Let us pray in unison together.
All: Source of redeeming grace and infinite goodness, bear us as in Christ we pray for
forgiveness. While you reach out to us in fellowship, we turn from you in shame.
We do not do what you command. We proclaim not your love, since we seldom
serve others. We confess Christ as Savior, yet obey him indifferently, if at all. Our
discipleship suffers, for we heed not your guidance. We are in need of repentance
as we confess our sins. Have mercy upon us and grant us your pardon.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Isaiah 6:1-8
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the
hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six
wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two
they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the

3
whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those
who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a
man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the
King, the LORD of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had
been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and
said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And
I said, “Here am I; send me!”

Reading from the Epistles

Romans 8:12-17
So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—
13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a
spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with
our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

Hymn of Promise
In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody;
there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

Reading from the Gospel
John 3:1-17
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night
and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can
do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I
tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” 4 Nicodemus said
to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the
mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the
kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and
what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from
above.’ 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know
where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus
said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and
yet you do not understand these things? 11 “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and
testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about
earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13
No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave
his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17
“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him.

“The Birthday of the Church”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his
only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe
in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Hymn
Come Thou Almighty King

Come, thou almighty King, help us thy name to sing; help us to praise:
Father, all glorious, o'er all victorious, come,
and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
Come, thou incarnate Word, merciful, mighty Lord, our prayer attend.
Come, and thy people bless, and give thy word success;
Spirit of holiness, on us descend.
Come, holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of power.
To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be, hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see,
and to eternity love and adore.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Lord Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing
Lord, dismiss us with your blessing;
fill our hearts with joy and peace;
let us each, your love possessing,
triumph in redeeming grace.
O refresh us, O refresh us,
traveling through this wilderness.
Thanks we give and adoration
for your gospel's joyful sound;
may the fruits of your salvation
in our hearts and lives abound.
Ever faithful, ever faithful
to your truth may we be found.
Savior, when your love shall call us,
from our struggling pilgrim way,
let no fear of death appall us,
glad your summons to obey.
May we ever, may we ever
reign with you in endless day.
Benediction
