Test 1: Magnetic properties

1-Use the Electromagnetic yoke to magnetize the specimens. .

2- From this test determine if the specimens are Ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, or diamagnetic

Specimen Ferromagnetic Paramagnetic Diamagnetic

Test 2: Color Identification

Identify the color of the specimens (Black, gray, yellow, shiny silver, brown)

Test 3: Density
1. You have to weigh the sample by taking three and write that down in the table.

2. Find the volume of the sample (in mL) by measuring water displacement.

3. Convert the density unit to (KG/m3).

Sample …………………………..

mass of metal __________ (g)

volume of water __________ (mL)

volume of water + metal __________ (mL)

volume of metal __________ (mL)

density of metal __________ (g/mL)

Test 4: Specific Heat

To determine the specific heat of a metal sample, we will use the concept that in a closed system,
heat lost by a hot object is gained by a cooler one.

1. Heat the sample to 200 C o in the furnace.

2. Record the temperature of the cold water (Tw1) and the sample (Ts1) just before combining
them.
3. Measure the mass of water in a beaker (mw) and of the sample (ms)
4. Take the sample out of the furnace and immerse it in the beaker of water.
5. Record the temperature (Tw2 = Ts2). (** When the temperature is stable.)
6. Calculate the Cp of the sample using the equation: ( use Cpw =4.18Kj/Kg.K)

mw Cpw ∆Tw = - ms Cps ∆Ts

Specimen mw Tw1 Tw2 ms Ts1 Ts2 Cp

Test 5: Corrosion resistance test

1. Immerse pre-cleaned specimens in a 10 percent solution of Nitric Acid in water.

This solution will turn all steels to a light to dark gray in just 2 minutes except for corrosion resistant
metals like stainless steel.
