Example 13-2-1

EXAMPLE 13-2

Stress Analysis of a Bevel-Gear Train

Problem: Determine the bending and surface stresses and safety factors in a straight bevel gearset
made of the same steel materials, and operating under the same conditions for the same
5-year life as in Example 12-7.
Given: From Example 12-7:
Transmitted power P  10 hp Pinion shaft speed ωp  2500 rpm
Tooth numbers Np  20 Ng  35
1
Pressure angle ϕ  25 deg Diametral pitch p d  8  in
Face width F  2.667  in
Fatigue strength
Bending S fb  38.937 ksi
Surface S'fc  118  ksi S fc  105.063  ksi
Assumptions: From Example 12-7:
Application factor Ka  1 Ca  Ka
Load dist. factor Km  1.6 Cm  Km
Size factor Ks  1 Cs  Ks
Surface factor Cf  1
Velocity factor Kv  0.652 Cv  Kv
Hardness factor CH  1 Temperature factor CT  1
Reliability factor CR  1 Life factor CL  0.890
0.5
Elastic coefficient Cp  2276 psi
From this section:
Crowning factor Cxc  1 Kx  Cxc
Stress adj. factor Cb  0.634 Mounting factor Cmd  1.5
Solution: See Mathcad file EX1302.
1 Determine the pinion torque from the given power and speed.
P
Tp  Tp  252.101 lbf  in (a)
ωp
2 Find the pitch diameters of pinion and gear.
Np
d p  d p  2.5 in
pd
(b)
Ng
d g  d g  4.375 in
pd
3 Find the pitch cone angles from equation 13.7b:

 Ng 
αg  atan  αg  60.255 deg
 Np  (c)
αp  90 deg  αg αp  29.745 deg

4 Find the pitch cone length L from equation 13.7a:

dp
L  L  2.519 in (d)
2  sin αp

5. Use the pitch cone length L to find a suitable face width, set to the maximum recom- mended value.
L
F  F  0.84 in (e)
3
6. Look up the bending geometry factors for pinion and gear in Figure 13-5 to find Jp  0.237 and Jg  0.201 .
7 Find the bending stress in the pinion from equation 13.9 using Jp.
2  Tp pd Ka Km Ks
σbp    σbp  19.893 ksi (f)
dp F  Jp Kv Kx

8 Find the bending stress in the gear from equation 13.9 using Jg.
2  Tp pd Ka Km Ks
σbg    σbg  23.456 ksi (g)
dp F  Jg Kv Kx

Note that the gear tooth is more highly stressed than the pinion tooth because the long addendum on the
pinion makes it stronger at the expense of the short-adden- dum gear tooth.

9. Look up the surface geometry factor for this combination of pinion and gear in Figure 13-6 to find I  0.076 .
Use this in equation 13.11 to find TD.

2
F  S'fc d p 0.774  CH 
I  Cv
TD      TD  347.319 lbf  in (h)
2 Cs Cmd  Cf  Ca Cxc  Cp Cb CT  CR 

10. Since TD > Tp , z = 0.667 . Use these data to find the surface stress with equation 13.10.

0.667
2  TD  Tp  C a C m
σc  Cp Cb     Cs Cf  Cxc σc  84.768 ksi (i)
F  I dp
2  TD  Cv

11 The safety factors can now be found as

S fb
Pinion Nbp  Nbp  2.0 (j)
σbp

S fb
Gear Nbg  Nbg  1.7 (k)
σbg
2
 Sfc 
Surface Nc    Nc  1.5 (l)
 σc 
12 These are acceptable safety factors.
