VA SOL OBJECTIVES VA BEACH OBJECTIVES
DNA has structure Click here to enter text.
DNA structure has changed over time
the variety of traits in an organism are the result of the
expression of various combinations of alleles;
meiosis has a role in genetic variation between generations; and
synthetic biology has biological and ethical implications.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
What are the organelles in a cell?
What do the organelles look like?
LEARNING TARGET(S)
Today I will: be able it identify animal cell organelles and their functions
So that I can: understand animal cells and later on plant cells
I will know I have it when: i can look at a diagram and identify at the specific organelles
HOW WILL STUDENTS DEMONSTRATE THEIR UNDERSTANDING? ASSESSMENTS-DIAGNOSTIC, FORMATIVE AND/OR SUMMATIVE
Performance Tasks/Products Traditional and Non-traditional
Children will perform 2 task that both expresses their students will take both an entrance and exit ticket to show their
understanding of the topics along with their creativity by doing a understanding of the material
card sort or creating your own cell
WARM-UP/HOOK:
kahoot, this kahoot will show me what they know and what they dont and explains to me who has a good understanding on it
STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES:
WARM UP
1. kahoot: this kahoot will be the beginning of the learning of animal cells. The kahoot will consist of the different organelles of the
animals cell and the different functions these organelles have. This kahoot is to see who has prior knowledge in the subject, will
be counted as a participation grade.
questions for kahoot
- What is this organelle? ( picture of Nucleus)
- What is this organelle? ( picture of mitochondria)
- What is this organelle? ( picture of cell membrane)
- What is this organelle? ( picture of ribosomes)
- What is this organelle? ( picture of cytoplasm)
- What is this organelle? ( picture of Vacuole)
- What is the function of mitochondria?
- What is the function of lysosomes?
- What is the function of the golgi apparatus?
- What is the function of cytoplasm?
- What is the function of the nucleolus?
takes notes about animal organelles and what their functions are (cloze Notes)
ACTIVITY
Kids will be able to choose between either of the stations
Will go over all the organelles and then the kids will do 2 stations
station 1 - card sort, kids will find the three cards that go together and then glue them on a sheet of paper to which they will turn in. They
are allowed to use notes on this
- cell membrane - acts as a barrier of the cell and controls what goes in and out - picture of cell membrane
- centrosome - assists in cell division - picture of centrosomes
- smooth endoplasmic reticulum - the synthesis of lipids - picture of smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- rough endoplasmic reticulum - synthesis, folding and modification of proteins (where ribosomes are found) - picture of rough
endoplasmic reticulum

- mitochondria - known as power house of cell where ATP or energy is produced - picture of mitochondria
- vacuole - storing things inside the cell - picture of vacuole
- golgi apparatus - transporting , modifying and packaging proteins and lipids - picture of golgi apparatus
- Ribosomes - synthesis of proteins - picture of ribosomes
- cytoplasm - house and maintain optimal environment for cell organelles - picture of cytoplasm
- lysosome - act as a garbage disposal and breaks down molecules - picture of lysosome
- nuclear membrane - controls what goes in and out of the nucleus - picture of nuclear membrane
- nucleolus - produces and assembles the cells ribosomes - picture of nucleolus
- nucleus - stores genetic information of the cell (DNA) - picture of nucleus
station 2 - create your own cells
children will receive a paper plate that represents a cell they will then be asked to use the materials provided to create and label the
organelles inside the animal cells. The students will be asked to use the playdoh to create the different types of organelles and then place
them onto the plate where the organelles belong they should then use a sharpie to mark which organelle it is. once checked by the
teacher then should put all materials back where they found them and put the plate into the trash can.
materials needed
- plate
- play doh
- sharpie
CLOSURE
1. the students will be asked to complete an exit ticket to test their knowledge and review some of what they learned today
Questions
1. diagram of cell - drag and drop the organelle onto the diagram
2. What is the name of the organelle that is known as the “power house”?
3. What is the function of the vacuole?
4. What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
5. What is the function of the golgi apparatus?
CLOSURE:
At the end of class the students will be asked to answer 5 questions about the material learned questions are up above
