Signals and systems
• Signal is a time varying physical phenomenon
which is intended to convey information
• Example: voice signal, video signal, signals on
telephone wires
• Noise is also a signal, but the information
conveyed by noise is unwanted hence it is
considered as undesirable.

Systems
• System is a device or combination of devices,
which can operate on signals and produces
corresponding response
• Input to a system is called as excitation and
output from it is called as response
• Example: Communication System

Digital System
• In the control system dealt so far, the signal at every
point of the system is a continuous function of time
• Controller is an analog controller
• Constructing a complex control function may even
become technically infeasible
• Digital computer can be used as a
compensator(controller) device
• Digital controllers used in digital control systems have
the inherent characteristics that they can accept data
for a short duration pulses (sampled or discrete data)
and produce a similar kind of output as control signal
