TUTORIAL 16: ELECTROMAGNETISM QUIZ

N04/3/Q5

1 (a) Fig. 1 shows a beam of electrons entering a magnetic field of magnetic flux density 8.4 mT.
The electrons are travelling with velocity 3.4 × 107 m s-1 at right angles to the field.

Calculate, for the electrons in the field, the magnitude of

(i) the force on an individual electron,

force = ……………………………… N [2]

(ii) the acceleration of the electron. State any assumption made.

acceleration = ……………………………… N

assumption = ………………………………………………………………………………….. [2]

(b) (i) Calculate the radius of the path of the electrons within the magnetic field.

radius = ……………………………… m [2]

(ii) In Fig. 1, sketch the path travelled within and beyond the field. [2]

ASRJC 2022 P3 Q7(part)

3 Two long parallel identical wires, wire X and Y are held with one directly above the other on a table.

The current in wire X is 90 A. The current in wire Y is 60 A and is in opposite direction to the current in
wire X. Wire Y is held in suspension magnetically at a distance of 5.0 cm above the wire X as shown
in Fig. 3.

Fig. 3

(a) Calculate the magnetic flux density at wire Y due to the current in wire X.

magnetic flux density = …………………………….T [2]

(b) Hence, determine the mass per unit length of wire Y.

mass per unit length = …………………. kg m−1 [2]

Electromagnetism Quiz Solutions

1 (a) (i) FB = Bqv = (8.4 x 10-3) (1.6 x 10-19) (3.4 x 107) [1]
= 4.6 x 10-14 N [1]

F 4.6 x 10-14
(ii) F = ma  a = m = 9.1 x 10-31 = 5.1 x 1016 m s-2 [1]
Weight of electron is negligible compared to FB [1]

v2
(b) (i) Centripetal force = m r , provided by the magnetic force [1]
mv2 (9.1 x 10-31) (3.4 x 107)2
r= F = 4.6 x10-14 = 0.023 m = 2.3 cm [1]

(ii) [1 for curve inside magnetic field]

[1 for straight line after exiting magnetic field]

(Any of the 3 paths is acceptable)

• Correct directions of B & E vectors shown in diagram

• State that electrical force = qE and magnetic force = Bqv, acting in opposite direction (show in
diagram)
• State that for charged particles to be undeflected, qE = Bqv, and only particles with velocity
v = E/B will pass through undeflected.
• State that for velocity > E/B, charged particles will be deflected in the direction of F B and for
velocity < E/B, charged particles will be deflected in the direction of F E.

μ0 Ix (4π × 10-7 )(90)

3 (a) B = = [1]
2πd 2π(0.050)
= 0.00036 T [1]

(b) For the wire to be suspended, mg = FB

mg = BIL [1]
m/L = (BI) / g = (0.00036)(60) / 9.81 = 2.2 × 10-3 kg m-1 [1]
