Unit 3 Objectives and Functions of Research

The document discusses the objectives and functions of research. Research objectives provide focus and direction for a study and inform the design of surveys and discussion guides. The key functions of research are description, explanation, prediction, prescription and planning, and monitoring and evaluation. Research aims to generate knowledge, solve problems, and inform actions and decisions.

Unit 3. Objectives and Functions of Research

Expository Essay on the objectives and functions of research

Research Objective’s

A research objective addresses the purpose of the investigation and types of

knowledge to be generated out of one’s investigation. Looking at the objectives of
the research, one can anticipate what is to be achieved by the study. A research
objective indicates the population of interest, the independent variable, and the
dependent variable. Research objectives are set at the very start of a project to
guide the research. Their main role is to ensure you gain insights that are relevant
and useful. First you should determine your primary research objective. This
summarizes the main aim of the research – what you want to find out. It should be
a neutral statement, led by an infinitive verb such as ‘to explore’, ‘to understand’,
or ‘to identify’ example; Your primary objective could be ‘To determine the
challenges manufacturers face in building a digital presence’, or ‘To explore the
buyers’ journey when choosing a new service provider’. You should then define
several specific research objectives. These indicate the topics or issues the research
plans to investigate to achieve the primary objective. In the case of exploring the
buyers’ journey, specific objectives may be ‘To explore the needs, behaviours and
decisions made at each stage of the journey’, ‘To identify key the moments of
truth’ and ‘To understand what factors are important from a provider’. Your
objectives should be set with your business goal in mind; the reason that underlines
why you are doing the research in the first place. Here we outline the four main
reasons why clearly defined objectives are vital to research success; first is
Providing focus and direction it means Carrying out research without setting
objectives is like going on a journey with no knowledge of the destination or how
to get there. You need to know where you are headed, and a map to get you there.
Having clear objectives will set you on a path to achieving your main aim and help
you get the most useful insight possible. Most research projects that go wrong lead
back to objectives not being clearly defined or understood. Unclear or cursory
objectives can lead to irrelevant data, or insights that lack depth. Second,Informing
survey and discussion guide design. It means that Without objectives, how will
you know what to ask your audience? Objectives provide you with clear direction
for writing your survey or discussion guide.Think about the topics you need to
cover and specific questions you need to ask that will allow you to meet your
objectives. Your objectives need to be clearly defined at the outset of the project
and kept top of mind at every stage; from survey design, through to analysis and
outputs.

Therefore, that is useful and impactful.Research objectives divide research aim

into several parts and address each part separately. Moreover, research aim
specifies WHAT needs to be studied and research objectives comprise a number of
steps that address HOW research aim will be achieved.they help keep you on
course for analysing data objectively, so that your findings are not affected by
confirmation bias or other prejudices and having a clear goal and a clear path to
reach that goal is vital to helping you deliver research that is useful and impactful.
Functions of Research

There are several functions of research: exploring new facts and truths (about
world, technology, etc.), learning the relationships that occur between the various
phenomena (market, internal), creating theoretical knowledge (then used for
innovation and creation of new products), identification of market opportunities
and potential risks, solving problems and undertaking challenges for development
of company. Research will therefore serve of the following functions:

Description - to provide baseline data or simply a picture of how things are.

Explanation (analytical) - to understand why things are the way they are, what
factors explain the way things are. Prediction - to predict how systems will change
under alternative scenarios (modelling). Prescription and planning (decision-
making) - prescription and planning relating to changes in existing systems.
Monitoring and evaluation - monitoring and evaluation of the effects of changes
during and after they have been made. Investigations may be made to compare
results in practice with predictions, or to monitor the effects of a
policy, management technique. The purpose of research is to inform action. Thus,
your study should seek to contextualize its findings within the larger body of
research. Research must always be of high quality in order to produce knowledge
that is applicable outside of the research setting. Furthermore, the results of your
study may have implications for policy and future project implementation. Behind

the list of problem-solving activities or research functions is a set of very important

questions about who is involved and who is in control at each stage: Who identifies
problems? Who diagnoses causes? Who identifies potential solutions? Who
decides on action? Who monitors and evaluates action and outcomes? These
questions emphasise the central role of decision-makers in decision-making.
Research therefore far from being a neutral, objective process.

Observations, knowledge, and concerns therefore tend to influence both the

selection of topics to be researched and the way that they are researched. Our own
experience, and the availability of data and information can all, consciously or
unconsciously, strongly affect our choice of problems to research and the questions
we address in our research. The results should be critically assessed bearing in
mind the focus and presentation. Applied research topics and methods are closely
related to the philosophy, objectives, and approaches of researchers. Therefore, It
plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that we use
existing treatments in the best possible ways. Research can find answers to things
that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way that healthcare
professionals work.
