Guidelines for Preparing English Literature Project

Topic Question:
Enumerate how the varied situations in life have been depicted through the subtle use of
humour, as reflected in Stephen Leacock's stories. Relate them with the humorous works of
Sukumar Ray. Compare any two literary pieces of the aforementioned writers.

1.To arouse an interest in reading great works of literature.
2. To empower the students to undertake research work, assimilate their thoughts and present
them in an organized manner.
3. To nurture their linguistic ability.

4. To enable them to analyse and interpret diverse literary prose pieces and express their

individual opinion.
5. To test their reading, comprehension and writing skills.

INTRODUCTION
Begin by defining what you understand by “humour”. Is it an essential component for living a
good life? In what way does a sense of humour contribute to the well-being of an individual?
Mention the role of humour and its importance in your personal /family /social life.

BODY
State how authors like Stephen Leacock and Sukumar Ray incorporated different types of
humour in their writings, citing examples/ instances from your prescribed textbook. Select
any two short stories (from outside your syllabus) which are penned by the aforementioned
writers and make an in-depth study and analysis of their writing styles, with special emphasis
on the humorous elements used by them and their impact (on the plot of their story as well as
the minds of the readers). Explain to what extent you have found the use of humour useful in
the two narratives.
CONCLUSION
Based on your understanding and appreciation of humour, comment to what degree the
inclusion or exclusion of humour might alter the tone and atmosphere of any literary piece.
You may justify your opinion by referring to the stories of Leacock and Ray that you have
just finished reading and suggesting an alternate plot or ending.

your own words.
