Unified Theory of Electrical Machines

Tutorial NO. (5)

DC Machines
4500
1. A separately excited dc generator running at rpm has the
𝜋
following parameters:
𝑟𝑓 = 80Ω 𝐿𝑓 = 40𝐻 𝑟𝑎 = 0.1Ω 𝐿𝑎 = 0.3𝑚𝐻 𝑀𝑑 = 0.8𝐻
a. Find the generated emf constant. ( Hence 𝐾𝑔 = 𝑀𝑑 𝜔𝑟 )
b. If the field is unexcited and the armature is open. Find the armature
voltage as a function of time and sketched it, if a constant voltage
of 160V is suddenly impressed across the field terminals.
c. Sketch the rise of armature current for case (b) if the armature
terminals are initially short-circuited.

2. A separately excited dc generator is connected to the load (𝑅𝐿 ). The

generator is driven at constant speed, but the voltage source connected
to field is such that the expression for field current can be written as:
𝑖𝑓 = 𝐼𝑓0 + 𝐼𝑓 sin(𝜔𝑡)
Obtain the expressions for:
a. Load current
b. Torque
c. Power converted from mechanical to electrical.
(Neglect armature inductance)

3. A 230V separately excited dc motor is driving a constant load torque

has the following data:
𝑟𝑓 = 115Ω 𝑟𝑎 = 0.4Ω 𝐿𝑎 = 0.01𝐻
𝑀𝑜𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑞𝑢𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐾𝑚 = 𝑀𝑑 𝐼𝑓 = 2 𝑁𝑚 /𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝐹𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐷 = 0
a. The armature current is 50A with rated voltage across the armature
and field. Determine the magnitude of constant load torque.
b. If the armature voltage is suddenly reduced by 20V, find the speed
as function of time. (total inertia J = 12 kgm2 ).

Induction Machines
1. A 3-phase, 400V, delta connected induction motor, takes an input
current of 60A at 0.85 pf lagging when running at full load. When
running light (no load) at 400V, the motor input current and power are
16A and 2.2 kw respectively. Its friction and windage losses are 0.8
kw. If the stator resistance per phase is 0.6Ω. calculate the shaft power
and its efficiency at full load slip of 0.04.

2. A 3-phase, star connected, 400V, 50Hz, 4 pole induction motor has

the following constant in ohms per phase referred to stator:
𝑟1 = 0.15 , 𝑥1 = 45 , 𝑟2 = 0.12 , 𝑥2 = 45 , 𝑋𝑚 = 28.5
Fixed losses is 400 watts. Compute:
a. The stator current, output torque and efficiency at a slip of 0.04.
b. The slip at which the maximum torque occurs, the maximum
torque and the corresponding power output.
c. The rotor torque and torque at starting.
d. The external resistance to be inserted in the rotor circuit to produce
maximum torque at starting. Stator to rotor effective turns ratio is
1.2.

3. A 10 kw, 400 V, 3-phase, 4 pole, 50 Hz slip-ring induction motor

develops rated output at rated voltage and frequency and with its slip
rings short-circuited. The maximum torque, equal to twice the full-
load torque, occurs at a slip of 10% with zero external resistance in the
rotor circuit. Stator resistance and rotational loss are neglected.
Determine:
a. Slip and rotor speed at full load torque.
b. Rotor ohmic loss at full load torque.
c. Starting torque at rated voltage and frequency.
d. Full load efficiency.
The rotor resistance is now trebled by inserting external resistance in the
rotor circuit. Find:
e. The slip at maximum torque.
f. Full load slip and rotor speed.
g. Starting torque.
h. Rotor copper loss at full load torque.
i. Developed power at full load torque and efficiency.
Discuss the effects of introducing external resistance in the rotor
circuit?
4. A 3-phase, star connected, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4 pole induction motor has
the following constants in ohms per phase:
𝑟1 = 0.8 , 𝑥1 = 2 , 𝑟2 = 0.3 , 𝑥2 = 2 , 𝑋𝑚 = 48
If the motor is operated at reduced voltage and frequency of 200 V, 25 Hz
compute:
a. Current and pf at the instant of starting and under maximum torque
condition; compare the results with normal values.
b. Starting and maximum (pull out) torques; compare with normal
values.
c. Under normal operating and at rated load, the motor has a slip of
0.03. find the value of slip if the motor is now operated at half the
voltage and half the frequency at the original rated load.

operation?
