SUB-SOIL INVESTIGATION

FOR

proposed R.C.C BUILDING FOR JNV

at
DALKHOLA.

Client :

Malda Central Division, CPWD, Malda.

Prepared By :

IIT Guwahati.
IIT GUWAHATI SHEET NO.: 1

INTRODUCTION:

Sub-Soil Investigation was carried out at the site of

proposed R.C.C Building for JNV at Dalkhola to find out the
Engineering properties of soil types.

This report consists of details of field investigation and

laboratory analysis along with the rational interpretation
of test results to find out the type of foundation to be
adopted and safe bearing capacity for the same.

All the field investigation and laboratory test were

conducted as per IS Specification.

FIELD INVESTIGATION:

Field investigation at the site consists of vertical

boring in 11 (Eleven) locations up to maximum depth of
30.00m from existing ground level.

LOCATION OF BORE HOLE :

The bore holes were done at different locations as below :

BH No. Location BH No. Location

01 & 02. Type-II.
03 & 06. Type-III. 09. Kitchen/Dining
04 & 05. School Building 10. Girls Dormitory
07 & 08. Boys Dormitory 11. Principal’s qtr

COLLECTION OF SAMPLES:

Disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected and

Standard Penetration Test were done during boring. In
addition to these study in change of strata, ground water
level, visual identification of soil such as colour, nature
and stiffness were recorded during boring.

DISTURBED SAMPLE:

Disturbed samples were collected at different depth and

were properly packed after collection.

UNDISTURBED SAMPLE:

Undisturbed samples could not be collected on soil layer

encountered due to presence of cohesion less soil.

STANDARD PENETRATION TEST :

Standard Penetration Test were conducted by using standard

split spoon sampler as per IS specification. A drive weight
assembly of 63.50 Kg drop hammer for free fall of 75 cm is
used. Nos. of blows required to drive the sampler for 1st
15 cm is neglected and blows for next 30 cm is counted and
is expressed as N-value. N-value at the site is found to
vary from 01 to >100. The results of SPT are graphically
shown in the bore hole log enclosed here with.

Details of field investigation are shown in the bore hole

log enclosed here with.

LABORATORY ANALYSIS :

Selected soil samples are analyses in the laboratory.

Following laboratory test were done on soil samples.

FOUNDATION :

From the results obtained it is seen that foundation in the

proposed site should rest at minimum depth of 4.50m below
existing ground level. Under such case normal footing is not
feasible in the site. Here bored cast in situ pile of
suitable dia and minimum length of 12.00m may be adopted. In
the area covered by bore hole no. 02, 09 & 10 minimum length
of pile should be 15.00m below existing ground level.

Foundation depth for different bore hole location are as

below :

BH NO. Minimum depth of Type of foundation

SAFE BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL :

Safe bearing capacity of soil for normal footing is not

furnished in the report as the foundation depth goes below
4.50m from existing ground level.

LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF PILE :

Load carrying capacity of bored cast in situ pile is

calculated by using the equation :
N
Qu = Ap (½ D۷ N۷ + PD Nq) + Σ Ki=1 PDi tan δ Asi

Where,

Ap = cross-sectional area of pile toe.

D = stem diameter.
۷ = effective unit weight of soil at pile toe .
PD = effective overburden pressure at pile toe.
N۷ and Nq = bearing capacity factors depending upon
the angle of internal friction  at toe.
n
Σi=1 = summation for n layers in which pile is
Installed.
K = coefficient of earth pressure.
PDi = effective overburden pressure for the ith layer
where I varies from 1 to n.
δ = angle of wall friction between pile and soil, in
degrees (may be taken equal to ).
Asi = surface area of pile stem.

Now for 400mm dia and 12.00m length pile carrying capacity is
calculated by using the parameters :

Ap = 0.1256 SM D = 400mm
۷ = 0.96 (Avg) MT/Cm
۷ = 1.01 (Toe) MT/Cm
PD = 7.68 MT/SM
n
Σi =1 = 1 K = 1.5
PDi = 7.68 MT/SM δ = 31º
Nq = 23.00 N۷ = 27.53
Asi = 10.048

Contd.
IIT GUWAHATI SHEET NO.: 6

Now
Qu= 0.1256 (5.361 + 176.64) + 53.976
= 76.86 MT each
Now Safe Load = 30.74 MT each (FOS=2.5)

Load carrying capacity of pile for different dia and length

are as below :

CONCLUSION :

From careful study of test results obtained conclusions are

drawn as :

1. Upper layer consists of clayey silt with sand followed

by layer of silty sand and sand up to termination depth
of boring.

2. Foundation in the proposed site should rest at minimum

depth of 4.50m below existing ground level. Under such
case normal footing is not feasible in the site. Here
bored cast in situ pile of suitable dia and minimum
length of 12.00m may be adopted.

Foundation depth for different bore hole location may be

considered from the table of clause discussion.

Load carrying capacity of pile for different dia and

length may be considered from the table of clause
discussion.

Strict supervision is recommended during execution of

piling or stone column work.

Grade beam of suitable dimension should be provided.

3. Seismic co-efficient as per IS Specification should be

considered during design.
