CME389- DESIGN OF TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS (R-2021)
UNIT – 1

Q1. Design a CI pulley to transmit 20Kw power at 300rpm. The dia of pulley is 500mm and
angle of lap is 180°. The pulley has 4arms of elliptical c/s where the major axis is twice that of
minor axis. The coefficient of friction between the pulley and belt tension should not exceed
250N in every 10mm width of belt. Shaft material’s shear stress=50MPa
Q2. Design an overhanging pulley for the following specs: P=18Kw, N=200rpm, α=165°,
µ=0.25, overhanging length=0.3m, thickness of belt=10mm, shear stress of shaft=40MPa,
belt material=2.5MPa, pulley/rim=4MPa. Density of leather belt material=1000kg/m³.
Q3. It is required to select a flat belt drive for fan running at 360rpm, driven by a 10kW &
1440rpm motor. The belt drive is open type and space between the driver and driven is
approx. 2m. The dia of the driven wheel is 1000mm.
Q4. Design an open belt drive to transmit 20Kw power at 720rpm to drive an aluminium
rolling machine where the i=3. The centre distance between 2 pulleys is 3m. Dia of rolling
machine pulley is 1.2m.
Q5. Find the width of the belt necessary to transmit 7.5Kw power to a pulley of dia 300mm.
If the pulley makes 1600 rpm and the coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.22
and the angle of contact is 210°. The max. tension in the belt is not to exceed 8N/mm of
width.
Q6. A flat belt is required to transmit 35kW power from a pulley of 1.5m effective dia(driver
dia), running at 300rpm. The angle of lap is 165° and µ=0.3. Determine width of belt, taking
centrifugal tension into account. It is given that belt thickness is 9.5mm and material density
1,1Mg/cm³. The related permissible working stress is 2.5MPa.
Q7. A flat belt drive is required to transmit 12Kw power from a motor running at 720rpm. The
belt is 12mm thick and has density of 0.001gm/mm³. Permissible stress in the belt should not
exceed 2.5N/mm². The dia of the driving pulley is 240rpm. Distance between the adjacent
shaft is 1.25m. Consider µ=0.25. Design the belt.
Q8. The layout of crossed leather belt drive has 6mm thickness and transmits 7.5kw power
operates at a velocity of 13m/s. µ=0.3, permissible tensile stress =7.5MPa. Density of leather
material=0.95gm/cc. Calculate i) Dia of driver and driven pulley, ii) Dimensions of belt, iii)
Tension in the belt. Consider 1% belt length may be in loop. Take N1=1000rpm, N2=500rpm,
c=1.5m.
Q9. A centrifugal pump running at 340rpm and is driven by a motor of 100Kw power running
at 1440rpm. The drive is to work for atleast 20hours per day. The centre distance between the
pump and shaft is 1200mm. Suggest a suitable and multiple V-Belt drive for this application.
Also calculate belt dimensions and stress induced.

Q10. Design a V Belt for the following specs:

P=7.5Kw, N1=1440rpm, N2=400rpm, d=300mm, c=1000mm, service period=16hrs/day.

Q11. Select a wire rope for a vertical mine to hoist 1500tonnes of ore in 8hrs shift from a
depth of 900m. Assume two compartment shafts with hoisting skipper. The max. velocity of
the hoist bucket is 12m/s with acceleration and deceleration time of 15sec each and a rest
period of 10sec. The hoisting skip weight is approx. 60% of load capacity of 1trip. Take the
young’s modulus of wire rope as E=0.84x105N/mm2. FOS=15.
Q12. Design a wire rope for an application of crane lifting of 65m deep and for a max. lifting
load of 25kN. The pace of crane hook is 450cm/s and the max. rated pace is achieved within
12sec. Consider the FOS=14. E=0.84x105N/mm2.
Q13. A truck is equipped with 10Kw engine, uses a roller chain. The distance between the
driver point to the driver point is 700mm. Driver runs at 1000rpm and driven sprocket runs at
320rpm. Working duration is 2 shifts per day and 8hrs per shift. Design and select a suitable
chain drive.
Q14. Refer previous qn. N1=970rpm, N2=330rpm, P=12.5Kw, ao=550mm. Working
duration=16hrs/day
