Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)

A `psychological tool/test to check the thought process of the candidate.

Perception of a candidate in written form actually tells a very accurate story about the mental health of the
candidate.
Right from your
 Handwriting to the construction of sentences
 The vocabulary (meaning: choice of words)
 Storyline itself tells a lot about the candidate
 Keep on practice by writing stories on various pictures
 Improve your writing speed.
 Keep a clean and calm thought process while writing story.
 Always write a practically possible story.
 Writing something from real life situations is also helpful.
 Do not use very tough language which is hard to understand.

The POSITIVITY, FERTILITY AND OPTIMISM level of the mind is reflected through this test.

Also, you should be very thorough with the instructions for PPDT given by the Officer and must stick to that.
Don't show your over zealousness while writing your PPDT.
Stick to the basics and you shall sail through.
Most of the times candidates try to over complicate the storyline, overlook the time limit, ignore the
instructions and thereby ruin their chances of clearing the PPDT.

OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating) and Group Discussion (GD) are equally important for getting screened in. For the
uninitiated, screened in means to clear the First Round of your SSB on the Day 1 itself. It's like the Macro-filtration system of
SSBs.

The only thing that you may do is to develop a healthy and creative mind with decent proficiency in English.

There are two types of responses to a problem: REACTIONARY & VISIONARY.

Reactionary: a response which is immediate, for example jumping in the river to rescue someone drowning,
etc.
and, Visionary: a response which involves a long period of time, for example, taking initiative and building a
bridge across a river with the help of locals and NGO's.
One more tip: Do not use many adjectives to describe your hero, instead, let his actions describe how he is as a
person.

Follow this algorithm and make a story:

 Observe image (A lone guy walking on an isolated path)
 Create a stress (It is windy and about to rain, stormy weather)
 Introduce a crisis
 Intertwine stress and crisis: (Let the stress make the crisis worse)
 Hero's reaction
 Outcome
 Ideally, story should be 80-100 words long and should be written in 4 minutes
COMING TO DISCUSSION:
Play a constructive role in the discussion, do not argue mindlessly, do not hog the limelight, do not raise your
voice.
In PPT, you will be given a series of 11 images, with 30 sec to make a story and 3 min to write story for each
image.
The group should be ready with a common story in the end, so one must discuss with that goal in mind.
Usually, the person who speaks considering the interests of the group gets recommended for Stage II testing.

1) Identify the situation and assign a central character( remember, you are the central character).
2) Give the background for the story, say in this image, a group of soldiers are laying a roadblock to guard
their outpost.
3) The tone of the story represents your mindset.
a. A positive minded and confident candidate will end the story on a positive note.

Example: The team leader identifies a group of terrorists rushing to your position , possibly a suicide
attack. The team leader( you), at the moment with only a fellow soldier and without means of
communication, face off the terrorists alone, are badly injured but they save the rest of their team from
the suicide bombers and are awarded for their bravery.

4) This test requires imagination

a. Read a few story books, non fiction books
One bullet away by Capt. Nate Fick is one of the most inspiring autobiography
5) Last, but not the least, be confident. Don't worry about what can happen or other factors, be the best
you can be.

Also observe that in a GD, conversations flow in a wave like pattern

This is your moment grab it.
Also when you speak and someone else also speaks at the same time, just continue with what you are
saying.
Finally, People often say that X didn't speak a word during GD but he got in? Because he
performed in aptitude.

How to write a story in PPDT?

 You will see the picture for 30 secs
 1 min to note down few details & then 4 mins to write your story on the page provided.
 In 1 minute you have to write down the details like gender of the characters you have seen,
their age , mood and circle the character you have seen first .
 All these details have to be marked inside the box printed on the sheet provided by SSB.
 Write M/F/P for male/female/person (if the gender is not clear).
 Write +/-/0 for positive/negative/neutral mood.
 Write their age assumed by you and as per the picture shown.
 Circle the details of the character you have seen first.
 On the right hand side of the sheet, you have to write the action happening in your story, it
could be in 3-4 words like ” saving a child” , “Enjoying in vacation” , “helping a poor” etc

How to write the story?

Good in grammatical sense Portray message from your personality
Speak about human emotions and actions Must be written in officers way
Weave story about hero and team. He must be Story should convey three phases:
accompanied by team. What has happened?
What is happening?
What will happen?
Picture Perception [Story Writing] Sample of the PPDT story sheet:

Assumptions may vary person to person, but try to assume practical and logical, if you find the character as a
female, then write it as a female but male.
Details in the Box
 I have seen a female[F] character first on the very left side of the frame with positive mode
and age around 26 years.
 I have also seen another female [F] on the right hand side of the frame with little sad facial
expression (negative mood) and age around 40 years.
 I have seen another character in the middle of the frame, I am not able to guess the gender so
I marked it as a person [P] but I guess the age would be 45 years and mood is neutral.
 It may vary person to person, one may see only two characters and other may assume it as a
battle ground, so it depends on how you think and respond to what you see.

Action Part
I find the scene of an agricultural land, so my story is related to farming/ agricultural.
Few keywords came to my mind like
farming+agriculture+help+fertilizers+drought+earning+livelihood
Write the action in very short.
keep your story relavent to the picture and characters mentioned by you.
Sometime you may not be able to finish the story in time, but that’s okay, you can add
the missing parts while narrating but again make sure you do not change your story
completely, but try to keep it relevant.
Discussion Test [Individual Narration + Group Discussion]
Individual narration and group discussion decides whether you stay for the day or screened
out. So, use your full ability to perform well enough during narration and discussion.
This part consist two things
 Individual narration
 Group discussion
Afte r the story writing, candidates will be divided in a group of 12 -14
All group members are suppose to sit in a semi circular fashion.
You will be getting chance to read your s tory again just to revise before the individual narration
starts.
Individual narration:
1. Once the narration start, assessors will not interrupt neither you are suppose to look
or talk to assessors.
2. You will be getting sufficient instructions from assessors before the narration starts.
3. Try to keep your story short and to the point, you may get maximum 1 min to finish
your narration.
Group Discussion:
1. As soon as the last candidate completes narration, group discussion begins among
group members without any interruption from assessors.
2. Generally it starts with speaking/yelling at the same time, you are suppose to keep
your calm and show maturity.
3. The motto is to make a common story out of the picture shown
4. Contribute some points during discussion and try to find out the common point in the
story which others also observed and add it to the story because no one objects in
something which he/she also observed.
 If most of you have seen a village environment then say that keep the village
environment only and make story around that instead of making something odd.
5. Convince others and also agree with others, supporting your story is good but forcing
others to take whole part of your story as a common story is never gonna work for
you.
Disagreement causes dissatisfaction, disapproval.
How you react to a contradiction, as everyone is in competitive mood.
Are you able to maintain the degree of patient listening?
The assessors would like to see as to how much mentally cool and composed are you.

What is required to be done?

The moment you speak
 your tone  your selection of words  your gesture
Please do not seek an opportunity to stop the discussion.
Managing the contradiction is more important rather than entering into contradiction.
Body language is an indication of your intention and mental language.
Body language should not overpower your words. Without body language, you become
neutral.
Speak considering the interests of the group
Tips while narrating:
 Be loud enough while narrating the story
 look at everyone except looking at assessors
 try to convey the message without going deep into the story content
 If you stuck in between come back on the track as soon as possible
 keep your story simple
Use story narration to get attention from assessors.
 Did you put your point even once?
 Did you contribute in the story making?
 Did you convince others regarding few points which you think are correct?

If they see a “village scene” then hero wanted to work for his village as an engineer.
Write something, which has quick action and not future plans
Make a happy ending with some twists and turns in your story
Assessors should get some interest and attention while reading/listening

Do not make detective type and superman type stories be normal and practical.
All stories are judged on the basis theme and qualities

slide story is of utmost importance for psychological assessment and your personal assessment.
We asked few recommended candidates personally about their blank slide story and this is what they have said:
Vinay: I wrote about my personal life and the challenges I have faced during my studies. I wrote about how did I overcome
those problems. Personally, I was not sure what I was writing because it was my first SSB attempt and I cleared it, so I can
not say what to write in blank story, but this is what I wrote.
Shilpi: I got guidance from one of my friends, so I wrote all story based on my personal life experiences and the blank
story was connected to other stories.
Kiran: My story was on science fiction, which I personally love a lot. I had prepared my blank story well in advance so it

 Don't go off-track
 Example we have seen 2 peoples standing near a dead body in a room and you just
started writing about the dead body, that a commando has died and make full story
on commando and war
 Start with a Firing name, which you will give to your story hero and the you have to
write the picture description in two or three lines like what is room scenario, who
one is there and how the things look like in room it will be written based on your
perception.
 A scene of 2 boys going to forest.
 Write like this- It is a pleasant morning and Rudra has decided to go into forest
for his survey on forest animals.
 Make a problem in story and let it solve by your hero,
 For example, Sometimes you are shown accident scene then write like this-
Ram is a social worker, It is Monday and he is going to college, Suddenly he saw
a man has stuck with a bus, he rushed toward it.
 Write starting
 lines for past which will tell what had happened. T
 Then, take your story in present which shows solution of that problem.
 And then for bright future of hero if u like, Most of you like to write bright
future in 4-5 lines and they don't even write about problem solution. So please
avoid it.
 Don't write bad about anything specially for persons if u can't see in image.
 Write about what you have seen in image
 Example a person is standing in front of mirror- Raman is getting ready for his
