Sheet Metal Interview Questions

1. What is the minimum inside bending radius in sheet metal fabrication?

For Hard materials (CRCA and Stainless steel) = 0.7 X thickness of sheet metal

For soft materials (Aluminium) = Sheet metal thickness

2. What is the minimum required flange length in sheet metal bending?

Minimum flange length = 4XT (thickness of sheet metal) + R (inside bend radius)

3. What is minimum recommended Hole/Slot distance from edge?

Minimum Distance = 3 X sheet Metal thickness + R (inside bend radius)

4. What are the general Tolerance followed during sheet metal Design?

ISO 2768-m

5. What is bending allowance?

After bending total length (length + Height) of sheet metal is not equal to flat
length, this increase in overall length is known as bending allowance

Flat Length = Length + Height - Bend Deduction

Diff b/w flat length

6. What s K-Factor in sheet metal fabrication?

K-Factor is constant and is used to calculate flat length; the value of K Factor
depends on material, bend radius, thickness and machines used

After bending total length of the sheet metal will be more than the flat length, this
change in length can be represented as “Bend allowance or Bend deduction”, This
Bend allowance or Bend deduction can be calculated using a constant called

K-Factor or Y-Factor

7. What is Y FACTOR?

Y-Factor is similar to the K-factor, used to calculate flat length

Y= (K.Pi)/2

tools

9. What are various surface finish operations done in sheet metal parts

1. Pre-treatment: Phosphate conversion coating, chromate conversion coating

2. Powder coating

3. Anodising

4. Plating: Zn plating/Galvanising, Tin Plating, silver plating

10. What is the factors effect selection of sheet metal materials?

1. Working Temperature

2. Corrosion resistance

3. Required Part strength

11. What are reinforcement techniques used to improve sheet metal part
strength?

1. Bending: Bending in direction 90 degree to load applied

2. Forming: Sheet metal rib

12. What is the application of Press tool in sheet metal operation?

Press tools are used in hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical presses used to

produce stamped sheet metal parts

Press tools can be classified based on operation: blanking, piercing, bending and
forming

13. What is Stamping Operation?

Sheet Metal Interview Questions

It is the process of shaping the sheet metal parts using press tool, blanking,
punching, pressing, piercing, bending and forming operations are done with
stamping dies

14. What are various sheet metal manufacturing operations?

1. Sheet metal cutting operations: Blanking, Punching, piercing, perforation,

2. Material removal operations: Debarring, grinding

3. Sheet metal forming operation: Straight bend, Angle bend, Hem bend

5. Final finish operation: Powder coating, plating

15. What are various sheet metal assembly operation?

1. Mechanical assembly (Screws, nuts, bolts and washers)

2. Weld assembly (arc welding, TIG and MIG)

3. Riveting

4. Folding techniques: Lap joint, hemming

5. Press fitting

16. What is the effect of grain direction in sheet metal during bending?

The grain structure of sheet metal gets aligned in the rolling direction during the cold
rolling operation, when bending soft material in the rolling direction cracks may
appear, therefore bending in direction perpendicular to the rolling direction is always
preferred

17. What happens when sheet metal bend radius is not achieved?

 When radius is less than the recommended, this can cause material flow
problem in soft material
 When radius is less than the recommended, this can cause fracture in hard
material
