What is the Anesthesiology Policy Research Rotation in Political Affairs?
The Anesthesiology Policy Research Rotation in Political Affairs is a four-week rotation
in the ASA Advocacy Office located in Washington, D.C. The program is designed to
allow resident physicians to experience the political, legislative and regulatory factors
that affect the delivery of patient care.
Who can apply for the Rotation?
Residents in their PGY - 4 / CA – 3 year and fellows are eligible to apply for the
rotation. CA - 3 residents applying for the rotation with a preference for serving during
the last three months of their residency program will be required to obtain ABA approval
to participate.
How long is the Rotation?
The length of the rotation is four weeks.
Will the 2023-2024 Rotation be in person?
Yes. The 2023-2024 rotation will be in person. All participants are expected to be in
Washington, D.C. for their designated month.
I’m not from Washington, D.C., where will I stay?
Residents will be responsible for securing their own living arrangements using the
stipend provided and can work with the ASA Washington Office to access different
sources of living options.
When can I complete the Rotation?
Rotations are held when Congress is actively in session. This commonly means
September as well as most months from February to June.
What are you looking for in an applicant?
An ideal applicant will be involved in their state component society and/or ASA
Resident Component, ASAPAC, ASA Grassroots Network, and have demonstrated
interest in ASA legislative and regulatory priorities. The ideal applicant exhibits effective
verbal and written communication and analytical skills, highly-developed interpersonal
skills, an affinity for networking, demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work in
a team setting.
When do I apply?
The application opens December 19, 2022 and closes on February 13, 2023 at
11:59pm EST. Applicants will serve during the upcoming academic year, beginning
September after applying.
Why should I apply?
Residents who participate in the program gain further appreciation for the enormous
impact that policymaking and governmental actions have on all facets of medicine,
especially on the practice of anesthesiology. Understanding health care policy issues
will directly affect and improve how residents care for patients each day in hospitals
and other clinical settings, which is essential to the way anesthesiologists practice their
specialty.

Applications will be processed online. In December, when the application opens, you’ll

Is this rotation approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)?
The rotation has been approved by the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA) to
count toward residency credit. A copy of the ABA approval letter can be viewed here.
What can I expect from this rotation?
Residents will participate in day-to-day activities in the ASA Advocacy Division, attend
lobby events sponsored by ASA, create specific research projects, and explore and
report on new law and policy changes affecting the specialty.
What if my application is not accepted?
Your application may be placed on our waiting list, which will be consulted if an
accepted participant is not able to participate.
What is the deadline to apply for the rotation?
All applications must be submitted online by the application deadline of February 13,
2023 at 11:59pm EST. Submissions after the deadline will not be considered.
Do I need approval from my program director?
Yes, an approval letter is required from your program director to be accepted to the
program. Note: The letter of approval is encouraged to be a full letter of
recommendation, if possible.
