Read “The Ginger Bread Man” carefully then identify the structures by completing the
following table!

One day, there lived an old little couple in a cottage. One day, woman
decided to make a gingerbread man for dinner. As soon as a gingerbread man was
decorated with eyes nose mouth, he jumped out and ran away.
The gingerbread man ran as fast as he could. Old woman and her husband tried
to chase him. However, gingerbread man ran too fast for them. Soon, he passed a
hungry pig; that pig wanted to eat him. That pig also tried to catch gingerbread man.
Gingerbread man said “Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the
gingerbread man.” Other animals like cow, horse, dogs, cats also wanted to eat him
but they couldn’t outrun him.
Now, gingerbread man came to a river. He was afraid of water. A clever fox came
and offered help to cross the river. Fox asked gingerbread man to climb on his head.
As soon as they reached the other side, Fox tossed up the gingerbread man in the air,
opened his mouth and finally ate him.

A long time ago, there lived an old and poor couple in a village in Japan. They didn‟t
wish for gold or fine clothes. They only wished for a child.
One day, the old woman washed clothes in a river. While washing, she was also wishing
for a child. Then, a giant peach came floating down the river. She took it home and would cut
it.
There was a human voice from that peach saying not to cut it. Suddenly it split open; a
baby boy jumped out of that peach. Those old people were very happy and named him
Momotaro which means Peach Boy.
Time went by and people in that village were afraid of Oni Monsters who stole their
belongings. When Momotaro was about 15 years old, he wanted to save his village from Oni
Monsters. Momotaro‟s parents were very proud of Momotaro. His father gave him a sword;
mother gave him a bag of dumplings.
On the way, Momotaro met a dog, a monkey and a hawk. He shared those dumplings to
them. Those animals joined him to fight Oni Monsters. Being a good leader, Momotaro
encouraged them to work together.
Finally, Momotaro sucessfully forced Oni leader to surrender. Then Momotaro with his
friends took treasure then shared it to all people in the village. Momotaro‟s parents were very
happy that Momotaro came back safely.

THE LEGEND OF BALI STRAIT

Long time ago in Daha Kingdom, lived a brahmana named Begawan Sidi Mantra. He was
very famous for his supernatural power. He had a son named Manik Angkeran. Manik Angkeran was
a strong and smart young man. Unfortunately, he loved to gamble and always spent his father’s
money.
One day, Manik Angkeran cried and begged his father to pay his debts. Then, Begawan Sidi
Mantra prayed to god. Suddenly, he heard a voice that told him to meet a dragon in Agung Mountain.
The dragon named Naga Besuki. Then he went into Agung Mountain. He rang the bell. Not long
after that, Naga Besuki came out and gave the jewelries.
Begawan Sidi Mantra turned back into his home. He gave the money to Manik Angkeran.
Manik Angkeran promised that he would not gambled and spend the money. Soon, he broke his
promise and spent all his father’s money. He heard that his father got the jewelries from the dragon in
Agung Mountain. Then, he thieved his father’s bell.

The Turtle and his Flute

Once upon a time, there lived a turtle that was good at playing the flute. One day, a man
caught the turtle. The man thought that the turtle must taste delicious so he put the turtle in a cage
in his house. Then, he asked his children not to let the turtle out of the cage while he went to the
field.
After the man left, the turtle started to play his flute with a sweet tune. The children stopped
playing after that sound. Then, they gathered near the cage. They were amazed to see a turtle
playing the flute.
The turtle immediately told the children that he could play music while dancing. The
children asked the turtle to show them. The turtle , then told them to let him outof the cage because
there was no space there. The children opened the cage and let him out. The turtle began to play
the flute and dance. His happy tune madethe children dance happily over the music.
After sometime, the turtle stopped playing his flute. The children cried and asked him not
stop, but the turtle said that his le were stiff and that he needed to take a walk a little to loosen
them. The children allowed him to take a walk,but they warned him not to go too far. Soon, the
turtle walked away from the children. Whe he was near the jungle , the turtle ran fast to reach his
house.

A long time ago, a starving lion was approaching a hare that was sleeping under a
shady tree. He moved quietly toward the hare. When he was about to catch the hare, he
saw a young deer passing by. Thinking it was a better meal than the hare, he turned around
and chased the deer, causing a noise. The noise woke the hare up and then he quickly ran
away. Meanwhile, the deer was a good runner, so he escaped from the hunry Lion.
Desperately, the Lion came back to the hare, only to find that hare had gone.

The old witch locked Hansel in a cage and set Gretel to clean the house. She planned to eat
them both. Each night the children cried and begged the witch to let them go.
Meanwhile, at home, their stepmother was beginning to wish she had never tried to get rid of the
children. “I must find them,” she said and set off into the forest.
Many hours later, when her feet were tired from walking and her lips were dry from thirst, she came
to the cottage belonging to the witch. The stepmother peeped through the window. Her heart cried
out when she saw the two children.
She picked up the broom leaning against the door and crept inside. The witch was putting some stew
in the oven when the stepmother gave her an almighty push. The witch fell into the oven and the
stepmother shut the door.
„Children, I have come to save you,‟ she said hugging them tightly. I have done a dreadful thing.
I hope in time you will forgive me. Let me take you home and become a family again. They returned
to their home and the stepmother became the best mother anyone could wish to have, and of course
they lived happily ever after!
