1.0 Purpose :
To establish and maintain the documented Standard Operating Procedure to ensure that the testing is carried out as
per the applicable specifications / standards.
2.0 Scope :
This Standard Operating Procedure is intended to determine the Tensile Strength, Yield Point, Yield Strength,
Elongation and Reduction of Area of Base Metal/Weld Metal of Steel.
3.0 Responsibility and Authority :
Responsibility of complying with this Standard Opearating Procedure lies with the Technicians and Engineers. Authority
of changing this SOP rests with the Techanical Manager.
4.0 Reference Documents :
As per ASTM E8 - 2013, ASTM A370 - 2013, IS 1608 - 2005 and Customer Specication.
5.0 Testing Instruments :
(1.) Universal Tensile Test Machine
Make: Fine Spavy Associate and Engineers Pvt. Ltd.
Sr. No. : 2012/04
Model No: TUF-1000 Kn -(STANDARD)
Max. Capacity: 100 tons. (1000 kN)
Grip jaws for rod specimen : ф (12-60) mm
Grip jaws for flat specimen: (0-60) mm thickness
(2.) Electronic Extensometer
Model No. : FEE 5
Serial No. : 182
(3.) Vernier Caliper
0-150mm range, Least count - 0.01mm
6.0 Test Specimen Preparation :
Test specimen are sampled by the customer or as provide in the product specification.
Test specimen are machined as per dimensions provided in ASTM E8 - 2013 or IS 1608 - 2005 or as per customer
requirement.
7.0 Test Method :
After machining the test piece dimensions are recorded in physical test observation sheet.
Original gague length is marked on the specimen as per ASTM E8 - 2013 or IS 1608 - 2005 by using centre punch.
8.0 Operation of machine & test results :
Switch on the machine, open Win UTM software. Enter user name & password. Save port settings and calibrate load in
master settings.
Start the hydraulic pump using switch provided on the machine.
Place the specimen in upper crosss head (UCH) jaws and clamp using clamp button on control panel.
Move the middle cross head (MCH) using up and down switch on control panel until the cover end of specimen is wihin
the MCH clamps. Clamp using clamp button.

Select new test and enter specimen details as required. Also select extensometer option is proof load is required as per
product specification.
If proof load is required then place the extensometer on the centre of specimen gauge length.
After entering sample details save test file as per appropriate Lab ID of the specimen and start the test using green
button on main control panel.
Open right control value slowly, The load is indicated on the screen. Tare load when it reaches 0.00 kN on screen.
Speed of load appliction can be increased/decreased by opening/closing of right control valve.
In case of test with extensometer, when extension on extensometer is 375 µM (in case of 25 mm extensometer gauge
length) For 750 µM (in case of 50 mm extensometer gauge length) remove extensometer message is displayed on
screen. So do accordingly.
After the sample is broken close the right hand control valve. And release clamp hold. Remove the specimen for jaws
using declamp buttons.
After removing specimen, release left control valve to bring UCH to its original position.
Place the broken specimen on flat table or V-block and match it. Measure the final gauge length using vernier caliper.
Also measures OD/ID/Width/Thickness at the point of fracture.
Enter relevant details is in software & observation sheet.
In case of test with extensometer select 2 data points on the straight line of extensometer graph to caluculate yield/
proof load automatically.
When testing without extensometer select the appropriate yield load/yield strength on the graph where there is
transition on the curve from elastic to plastic region as shown in figure.
Record the relevant details in observation sheet.
Report is prepared as per UMS/F/01.

9.0 Acceptance / Rejection Criteria :
As per product or customer specification.
10.0 Invalidation of test :
Faulty sample preparation not meeting requirements of ASTM E8 - 2013 or IS 1608 - 2005. Specimen showing crakcs or
porosity after machining. If the sample breaks outside the gauge length the test has to be carried out on another
sample of same material.
11.0 Calibration of Testing Equipment :
UTM shall conform to requirement of ASTM E4 - extensometer as per ASTM E83 - calibration frequancy is once in
twelve months.
12.0 Record :
Results are recorded in physical observation sheet UMS/F/13 and report is prepared as per UMS/F/01.
13.0 Accomodation & Enviromental Conditions :
The machine is kept in area 3m X 3.5m.
The test should be carried out within the temperature range of 10°C to 35°C, unless otherwise specified as per IS 1608 -
2005. Ideally test is to be carried out in controlled enviroment within the temperature range of 18°C to 28°C
14.0 Uncertainty Components (Type B)
14.1 Uncertainty due to calibration certificate (Normal Distribution)
14.2 Uncertainty due to accuracy of the equipment, +/- 1% (Rectangular Distribution)
14.3 Uncertainty due to resolution of the equipment, 0.05kN (Rectangular Distribution)
14.4 Uncertainty due to error in measurement of area of cross section (Rectangular Distribution)
