Introduction

This is a step-by-step tutorial in which you learn how to process a traverse.

TPS data with measured foresights and one scan have been collected from a total of 13 setups.
A traverse will be extracted and processed using these setups.

The functionality discussed in this guide requires the TPS Processing license.

The data from the following folders will be used in this tutorial:
• Data\traverse_2593_0826_100147\ contains a DBX job with traverse
• Data\contains the traverse control points.

1. Import data

1.1 Start Infinity and create a new

project. To import the data, select
Import from the Home ribbon bar.

1.2 To import the data using the default

settings, navigate to the data
directory, highlight the file “traverse”
in the Import dialog and select Import.

1.3 To import the control points, select

Import from the ribbon bar and in the
Import dialog select “ASCII” from the
drop down data type list.

1.4 Navigate to the data directory and

highlight the file
“Traverse_Control_Points” of type
“txt”.

1.5 Navigate to Template under Import
settings and select New… from the
dropdown list.

1.6 In the Import ASCII Template Editor

change the following:
TemplateName: P,E,N,H
SettingsColumn Separator: type “,”.

1.7 Now that the Preview has changed,

set the header for each “Unused”
column.
• Column 1: Point Id
• Column 2: Easting
• Column 3: Northing
• Column 4: Ortho Height
and select OK.

1.8 In the initial import dialog, where the

Template is now “P,E,N,H”, highlight
again the file
“Traverse_Control_Points” of type
“txt” and select Import.

• After importing the data and
the control points, they can be
viewed in the graphical view.

2. Process the traverse

2.1 To create a new traverse, you need to

start the Traverse Wizard: select
Traverse in the Processing ribbon tab.

2.2 In the Traverse Wizard window, input

a name for the traverse, highlight the
first setup in the list (CP06). To
extract all traverse setups
automatically, select the Add (auto)
button and select Next.

• The setups that will be

included in the traverse are
transferred to the right
window pane.
• The Traverse Technique as
well as the Start, End,
BackSight and ForeSight points
are determined automatically.

However, they can be
changed, by selecting the edit
button (pencil) next to them.

The black arrow before the

setup in the left window pane
allows for viewing the stations
that were measured from the
current setup and it helps the
user define a traverse route.
If you need to manually add a
highlighted setup in the
traverse, select the arrow
pointing to the right. In this
case, the setups that are
available for selection will be
the ones that are linked with
measurements to the previous
selected setup.
If you need to manually
remove a highlighted setup
from the traverse, select the
arrow pointing to the left
If you need to remove all
setups from the traverse,
select the double arrow
pointing to the left.
In case the Sets of Angles
application has been used in
the field or in Infinity, tick the
Use reduced measurement
from Sets of Angles
application for traverse
processing.
2.3 At least one observation from setup
S5 is marked as out of tolerance .
To find and remove this observation
from traverse processing, drill in setup
S5, by using the black arrow on the
left side of the setup.

2.4 Drill in the foresight target FS S6 and
move to the Residual V column. Find
the observation flagged in bold red,
and deselect it.

• Upon deselecting the flagged

observation, the icon
changes to

In the Tolerances-Residuals
section, tolerances about
horizontal and vertical angles
as well as slope distance can
be set.
These tolerances are activated
by the Use tolerances option
that is by default selected.
2.5 To check that all slope distances and
height differences are within the
specified tolerances, move to the
Distances tab. After this has been
verified, select Next.

2.6 Leave the default traverse processing

parameters unchanged and select
Next.

Available adjustment
methods include:
Compass rule, Transit rule,
2D Helmert and Least
Squares.
Depending on the selected
adjustment method, there
are settings regarding
standard errors per angle
and distance calculation,
max height error per
traverse point, relative
accuracies in 2D/1D, as well
as max station differences
before and after
adjustment.

2.7 Select the method that will be used to
distribute Angular Misclosure Equally
and Height Misclosure by Distance
and select Next.

• The misclosure and accuracy

checks are within tolerances
.

Apart from selecting a method

for misclosure distribution, the
use of start or end azimuths is
also available to apply a
rotation in the initial
orientation of the traverse.
2.8 In the Results page, apart from the
general traverse information, the final
coordinates for the traverse setups as
well as the station differences before
and after adjustment are displayed.
To store the results and exit the
Traverse Wizard, select Finish.

If a scale factor has been

calculated after traverse
processing, it can be applied to
scale the observations.

• After traverse processing, the

points are rotated and moved
to the correct position, based
on the control points.

3. Create a traverse report

Leica Infinity, How to process a traverse 8

3.1 Move to the TPS tab of the Inspector
and select the Traverse Applications
button.

3.2 Highlight the traverse and select

ReportsTraverse from the Home
ribbon tab.

If you need to change the

Report Header, select Edit
and follow the instructions
on the screen.
If you need to reset the
Report Header to the
default one, select Reset.
The traverse report provides
all the necessary
information about the
processed traverse:
parameters and balancing
method used, computed
accuracy, station
coordinates, misclosures,
error distribution and many
more.
