20. (i) An electron is accelerated through a potential difference V. Write the expression for its
final speed, if it was initially at rest.
(ii) In the given figure, charge +Q is placed at the centre of a dotted circle. Work done in
taking another charge +q from A to B is W1 and from B to C is W2. Which one of the
following is correct? (i) W1 > W2 (ii) W1 = W2 (iii) W1 < W2.

21. Nichrome and copper wires of same length and same radius are connected in series.
Current I is passed through them. Which wire gets heated up more? Justify your answer.
(ii) How does one explain increase in resistivity of a metal with increase in temperature?

22. (i) State Biot- Savart’s law in vector form expressing the magnetic field due to an element
carrying current I at a distance from the element.
(ii) Write the expression for the magnitude of the magnetic field at the centre of a circular
loop of radius r carrying a steady current I. Draw the magnetic field lines due to the current
loop.

23. (i) Define the term magnetic susceptibility and write its relation in terms of relative
magnetic permeability.
(ii) Two magnetic materials A and B have relative magnetic permeabilities of 0.96 and 500.
Identify the magnetic materials A and B.

24. The figure shows two sinusoidal curves representing oscillating supply voltage and
current in an ac circuit. Draw a phasor diagram to represent the current and supply voltage
appropriately as phasors. State the phase difference between the two quantities.
25. A. For a glass prism (μ= ) the angle of minimum deviation is equal to the angle of
prism. Find the angle of prism.

B. A ray of light PQ incident normally on the refracting face BA is refracted in the prism
BAC made of material of refractive index 1.5. Complete the path of ray through the prism.

26. A source of ac voltage V = V0 sinωt is connected across a pure inductor of inductance L.


Derive the expressions for the instantaneous current in the circuit. Show that the average
power dissipated in the circuit is zero.

27 A. (a) Identify the part of electromagnetic spectrum used in (i) radar and (ii) eye surgery.
Write their frequency range. (b) Prove that the average energy density of the oscillating
electric field is equal to that of the oscillating magnetic field.

B. Name the type of electromagnetic waves having a wavelength range 0.1 m to 1mm. How
are these waves generated? Write their two uses.

28. Describe the working principle of a moving coil galvanometer. Why is it necessary to use
(i) a radial magnetic field and (ii) a cylindrical soft iron core in a galvanometer?
Write the expression for current sensitivity of the galvanometer.
Can a galvanometer as such be used for measuring the current ? Explain

30. A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a
three dimensional co-ordinate system as shown in the figure. The electric field in the region is
given by = 50 x , where E is in N/C and x is in metres. Find
(i) Net flux through the cylinder (ii) Charge enclosed by the cylinder.

31 A. (i) Define the capacitance of a capacitor. Obtain the expression for the capacitance of a
parallel plate capacitor in vacuum in terms of plate area A and separation d between the
plates. (ii) A slab of material of dielectric constant k has same area as the plates of a parallel

plate capacitor but has a thickness of . Find the ratio of the capacitance with dielectric
inside it to its capacitance without the dielectric.

31 B. (i) Define electric flux. Is it a scalar or a vector quantity?


A point charge q is at a distance d/2 directly above the centre of a square of side d, as shown
in the figure. Use Gauss’s law to obtain the expression for the electric flux through the
square.
(ii) If the point charge is now moved to a distance d from the centre of the square and the side
of the square is doubled, explain how the electric flux will be affected.

32 A. (i) Explain the meaning of the term mutual inductance. Consider two concentric
circular coils, one of radius r1 and other of radius r2 (r1 < r2) placed co-axially with centres
coinciding with each other. Obtain the expression for the mutual inductance of the
arrangement. (ii) A rectangular coil of area A, having number of turns N is
rotated at ‘ f ’ revolutions per second in a uniform magnetic field B, the field being
perpendicular to the coil. Prove that the maximum emf induced in the coil is 2πfNBA.

32 B. ( i) Describe the working principle of a step up transformer with the help of a suitable
diagram. Obtain the relation between input and output voltages in terms of the number of
turns of primary and secondary windings and the currents in the input and output circuits.
(ii) Given the input current 15 A and the input voltage of 100 V for a step up transformer
having 90% efficiency, find the output power and the voltage in the secondary if the output
current is 3 A.

33 A. (i) Draw a labelled ray diagram showing the image formation of a distant object by a
refracting telescope. Deduce the expression for its magnifying power when the final image is
at infinity. (ii) The sum of focal lengths of the two lenses of a refracting telescope is 105 cm.
The focal length of one lens is 20 times that of the other. Determine the total magnification of
the telescope when the final image is formed at infinity.

33 B. ( i) Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation by a combination of two thin
convex lenses in contact. Obtain the expression for the power of this combination in terms of
the focal lengths of the lenses.
(ii) A ray of light passing from air through an equilateral glass prism undergoes minimum
deviation when the angle of incidence is 3/4th of the angle of prism. Calculate the speed of
light in the prism.

34 . Magnetisation and Magnetic intensity

When the atomic dipoles are aligned partially or fully, there is a net magnetic moment in the
direction of the field in any small volume of the material. The actual magnetic field inside
material placed in a magnetic field is the sum of the applied magnetic field and the magnetic
field due to magnetisation. This field is called magnetic intensity (H).

Where M is the magnetisation of the material , is the permittivity of vacuum and B is the
total magnetic field. The measure that tells us how a magnetic material responds to an
external field is given by a dimensionless quantity is appropriately called the magnetic
susceptibility: for a certain class of magnetic materials, intensity of magnetisation is directly
proportional to the magnetic intensity,

( i) Magnetisation of a sample is :
