Tutorial sheet 2

ISSUE DATE: 06/05/2024

Question 1
Consider the mixing process taking place in a two-stage system as shown in Fig. 1.0.
1) The goal is to tightly control the exit temperature 𝑇5 and concentration at the outlet of the tank
2. The major disturbances are the stream temperatures and composition, including the steam
temperature.
2) Assuming that the heats of solution weakly depends the concentrations and can be neglected,
and that the hold-up for each tank is constant.
a) Identify the state variables of the system.
b) State the balances that should be performed to determine completely the dynamic behaviour of
the system.

c) Develop the state models that describe the dynamic behaviour of the process, i.e., changes in
liquid levels and changes in temperature.
d) Develop the transfer function relating 𝑻′𝟑 (𝒔) to 𝑻′𝟏 (𝒔), 𝑻′𝟐 (𝒔) and 𝑻′𝒔𝒕 (𝒔).
e) Develop the transfer function relating the exit temperature 𝑻′𝟓 (𝒔) to 𝑻′𝟏 (𝒔), 𝑻′𝟐 (𝒔), 𝑻′𝟒 (𝒔) and
𝑻′𝒔𝒕 (𝒔).

Question 2
A stirred tank reactor has an internal cooling to remove heat liberated in the reaction. A proportional
controller is use to regulate the coolant flow rate so as to keep the reactor temperature reasonably
constant. The controller has been designed so that the controlled reactor exhibits typical underdamped
second order temperature response characteristics, when it is disturbed either by feed flow rate or
coolant temperature changes.
a) The feed flow rate to the reactor changes suddenly from 0.4 to 0.5 kg/s and the temperature of
reactor contents initially at 100℃, changes eventually to 102℃. What is the gain of the transfer
function (under feedback control) that relates reactor temperature changes to changes in feed
flow rate? (specify units).
b) The operator notes that the resulting response is slightly oscillatory with maxima estimated to
be 102.5 and 102.0℃ occurring at times 1000 and 3060 sec after the change is initially
initiated. What is the complete transfer function?
c) The operator failed to note the rise time, predict 𝑡𝑟 based on the results in (a) and (b).
Question 3
a) The set-point of the control system under proportional control with 𝐾𝑐 = 5 undergoes a step
change of magnitude 2. If the system has the following transfer functions
2
Gv G p  and Gm  1
 s  1 2 s  1
Determine the following:
i) The closed-loop transfer function.
ii) When the maximum value of the response 𝑦 occurs.
iii) The offset and period of oscillation.
iv) With the help of key characteristics as determined in (ii) and (iii), Sketch the response 𝑦(𝑡).
a) A block diagram of the closed-loop system is shown below.
b) If the transfer functions for this system are as follows
2 1
c) G1 ( s)  5 G2 ( s )  G3 ( s )  and K m  1
2s  1 s 1
Determine
i) The closed-loop transfer function for disturbance changes 𝑌(𝑠)⁄𝐷(𝑠).
ii) The values of the controller gain 𝐾𝑐 which will result in a stable closed-loop system
