English grammar : Quantifiers : 2-I’m tired, but luckily I have a little time to relax .

Quantifiers are words we use to indicate/describe the quantity , 3- I like going to the cinema, but I have little money .
4- Unfortunately, I can’t communicate with Spanish tourists .I speak
the amount or the number of something .They don’t express the
little Spanish .
exact quantity or amount, they’re approximate not precise.
• A little = small but enough quantity : positive meaning ( 1, 2 )
There are different quantifiers ; some quantifiers express only • Little = very small quantity; not enough : negative meaning (3,4 )
countable nouns(1), some describe only uncountable nouns(2) We use a few, few with countable plural nouns :
while some other quantifiers express the both (1&2). 1- Fatima is happy with her new job, she has a few friends .
Quantifiers answer two principal questions : 2- If you are interested in English, I have a few books .
• How much ? 3- Kamal feels alone; he has few friends .
4- Lets be quick ! there are few minutes before the bus leaves .
•How many ?
• A few = a small, but enough number : positive meaning ( 1,2)
We use How much with uncountable nouns and How many • Few = a very small number; not enough: negative meaning ( 3,4 )
with plural countable nouns . • How much / How many ?
Some quantifiers express big quantities ( much, many, a lot of, ….) We use how much and how many to form questions about
, some express small quantities ( a little/ little, a few/ few ) , and quantities , numbers , and amounts of something .
some describe undefined quantities ( some, any ) . → We use how much with uncountable nouns :
• How much water do you drink a day ?
We use some and any with (1&2) . • How much information is there in the article ?
→ We use some in affirmative/positive sentences only : • How many books do you read per year ?
• How many oranges are there in one kilo ?
• There is some [ water, bread, meat, fruit,…..]
Practice :
• There are some [oranges, apples , pens, books , …..] Fill in the blanks the correct possible quantifier .
→ We use any in negative sentences and questions : 1- We don’t have ………………. cheese , we need to buy ……………… .
• There isn’t any water, bread, …… 2- There is ………………………….. coffee if you want …………….. .
• Is there any water, bread …. ? 3- Is there ……………….. interesting information in the book ?
4- …………………………………. stars are there in the sky ?
• There aren’t any oranges , pens , books, …
→ ………………………………………………………………………………..
• Are there any oranges, pens, books … ? 5 - ………………………………………………………… is in the bank ?
• The student is free, he doesn’t have any homework . → ………………………………………………………………………..
• Do you have any homework today ? 6 - …………………………………………. Countries are in the world ?
7- Normally, Maths students do ………………………………… homework but Adil
• I don’t need any apples or bananas for desserts . isn’t interested . He does ……………………. exercises .
• Do you need any apples or bananas for desserts ? 8- If the children are hungry they can take …………………. bread and butter .
We use much with uncountable nouns in negative sentences 9- Wife : There isn’t …………………. cumin in the kitchen . You need to get
……………………………… today.
and questions : Husband : ……………………………. shall I get ?
• There isn’t much tea in the tea pot . Wife : ………………………….. .
• We don’t use much meat in the soup . Husband : What about meat ? Do we need …………………… ?
• Is there much bread ? …………………………………………………………… Wife : No, we don’t need ………………… meat , but if you want bring ………..
• Do you eat much bread ? ………………………………………………………… milk .
We use many with plural countable nouns in negative sentences 10- There is …………………… sugar in the coffee, tell me if you need more .
and questions : 11- The boy is not friendly . He has …………………. friends at school .
12- Taha Abderhman is a famous writer, he has …………………… readers .
• The girl doesn’t have many friends . 13- Lionnnel Messi has ………………………… fans .
• There aren’t many potatoes in a kilo . 14- ………………………………… money do I need to get the match ticket ?
• Do you think many students will come to the party ? → You don’t need …………………….. , only 20 dhs is enough .
• Are there many mistakes in your answer ? But, I don’t have 20 dhs , I have ………………….. , 7 dhs .
We use a lot of / lots of with uncountable and plural countable
in all forms :
• In summer I drink a lot of water , but I don’t eat a lot of food .
• Do you need a lot of / lots of money ?
• There is a lot of / lots of grammar in this book .
• The boy does a lot of exercises to do, but he doesn’t have a lot of
/ lots of mistakes .
• Does the couple have a lot of / lots of children ?
NB: we can use much and many in affirmative sentences, but it is
better to use a lot of / lots of instead .
When we talk about small quantities and numbers , we use
the quantifiers : a little , little, a few , few . We use them in
affirmative sentences only :
We use a little and little with uncountable nouns :
1- There is a little milk if you want it with coffee .
